Why is black oxide coating so difficult on 303 stainless steel?
Q. what alternate methods to blacken the part (that add negligible increase in dimension) are there? you didn't answer my question! we have some parts that are black oxide coated, supposedly class 3. when I get the parts, I can rub it off with my fingers. is it supposed to come off like that?
Asked by Ming - Mon Sep 14 17:19:53 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All stainless steels are "stainless" because of a spontaneously forming layer of chromium oxide on the surface. anything that interrupts that oxide layer will cause corrosion. Black oxide is formed when carbon steel is converted to magnetite through oxidation. This process cannot work on stainless steel without destroying it's corrosion resistance. Heating stainless steel will give a bluish tint, but it too will damage the corrosion resistance because the chromium is tied up by carbon, instead of being allowed to form a chrome oxide layer. Painting is the only process that will not destroy the corrosion resistance of the stainless part.

Leatherman Wave black oxide or regular?
Q. Just got a leatherman wave black oxide and it's pretty cool but it shows scratches really easily. I know a black oxide finish has its advantages but I can't stand scratches on my new stuff :( The black also looks cooler. Should I just get the regular silver one? just need some opinions ASAP please

A. If you can't stand the visible scratches then I think you should go with the standard stainless one. Both are very nice tools, and just having one is a privilege.

The black oxide of iron, Fe3O4, occurs in nature as the mineral magnetite. This substance can also be made in
Q. the laboratory by the reaction between red-hot iron and steam according to the following equation. Fe (s) + H2O (g) yields Fe3O4 (s) + H2 (g) When 36.0g of H2O is mixed with 167g of Fe, which is the limiting reactant?
Asked by hotjaleesa - Thu Mar 27 18:10:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. correct equation: 3Fe + 4H2O --> Fe3O4 + 4H2 this means: if you take 3 Fe atoms you need 4 molecules of water = you must take a molare ratio of 3:4 for Fe:H2O n=m/M n(Fe) = 167 g / 55.85 g/mol = 2.99 mol n(H2O) = 36 g / 18 g/mol = 2 mol thus H2O is the limiting reactant (you would need 3.99 mol H2O = 71.78 g)

Iron Oxide Black, Yellow, Red ---- ???
Q. I bought a multivitamin, and it contains - Iron Oxide Black - Iron Oxide Yellow - Iron Oxide Red How harmful are these additives? Should I return the product for refund? Help
Asked by Cyrus - Wed Sep 3 19:36:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually, ferrous oxide FeO is the black one and ferric oxide Fe2O3 is the red one (that is common rust) and these two are not considered harmful. A yellow oxide instead doesn't exist. Maybe it refers to ferric hydroxide Fe(OH)3 that is classified as irritant. In general these 3 copounds are safe to take orally (even because of the very low doses contained in a multivitamin).

Chemistry: Unknown black powder - Oxide?
Q. I have to find the identity of this black powder for chemistry, I've done some experiments to try and figure out what it is but I'm running out of ideas. It appears as a black powder, has a slight silvery sheen to it, it is not electrically conductive (not graphite), must have a very high melting point (does nothing when heated on a bunsen burner), does not react when placed in a flame, looks partially soluble in water (maybe), and does not appear magnetic. Does anyone know what experiments i could do from here? I'm looking in particular for something to figure out if it is an oxide or not, but I'm not quite sure how. Thanks

A. sounds like plane old carbon haha... wont burn because it isnt hydrates, not conductive... not 100% but i remember doing that really exciting experiment with concentrated sulfuric acid on paper... and you're left with a black goo because the H2SO4 dehydrates it... id imagine it then settled into a powder. you can look up it's properties to aid u... but it's a step in the right direction

why is the black coating at the bottom of the crucible will not affect the final results?
Q. if all particles have been removed, the black coating at the bottom of the crucible will not affect the final result, why is this true??? this is about the magnesium oxide lab.
Asked by UshouldhelpmeTY :D - Sat May 31 01:12:30 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the coating on the INSIDE of the crucible formed in a previous MgO lab, does not affect your lab. that coating does not change in weight during your experiment, and it does not react with any of your chemicals in the experiment . It is now part of the glaze. after you heat-to-dry your crucible, the only weight changes come from adding Mg at the beginning , & making MgO at the end. if coatings don't react, we usually recycle the crucible through the experiment until it cracks

A. There is nothing wrong with swishing them around in a bowl of warm, ( not hot )soapy water ( mild dish soap ) the water will all evaporate after anyway. It will also clean perspiration off the rest of the frame that most people tend to forget about. That should remove most of it, then you can do the rest as you already said.

A. Why mega dose it? I have not heard N.O. supplements being mega dosed in the weight lifting community. I am sure it should yield a little more result but, I still do not see it as a wise choice because of $$. Try taking a look for a creatine supplement, its the average stack. N.O. before workout, creatine + carb + protein after workout.

I did some water electrolyis with aluminum electrodes and some black specs showed up. What are they?
Q. I'm guessing it was aluminum oxide? Thanks for the help. Just a note, they appeared on the aluminum foil.
Asked by Bob - Sat May 17 21:40:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you have probably done is 'anodise' the aluminium. The aluminium anode has its surface oxidised by the oxygen formed in the electrolysis. The aluminium oxide coating is usually a dull grey colour but under different circumstances can be othe colours including black. Check out this link :- Hope this is some help.

Q. What are the meaning of following abbreviations? These abbreviations are on the drawings of mechanical parts. All of them should be the term of surface/heat treatment. 1) iridite ncp gt grey 2) black oxide 3) iridite ncp 4) HAR 5) hardened group
Asked by Hong L - Fri May 11 09:55:54 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. These are all metal finishes, they should be on an appendix. Iridite is an aluminum treatment and available on line. Black oxide is a finish, HAR probably is short for hardened but may be a company short as in har conn chrome finished. As for Hardened group, not knowing what the item is it could mean any form of exterior case hardening or a metal alloy.

See: In contrast, copper oxide will dissolve easily in dilute sulphuric acid. This is an example of an acid reacting with a base to give a salt + water CuO + H2SO4 -> CuSO4 + H2O See:

Asked by Baqsam - Sun Dec 21 06:08:11 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. moles Fe = 67.0 g / 55.847 g/mol= 1.20 moles H2O = 36.0 / 18 g/mol= 2.0 ratio : 3 : 4 Moles H2O needed = 1.20 x 4 / 3 = 1.6 we have 2.0 moles of water so H2O is in excess and Fe is the limiting reactant moles Fe3O4 = 1.20 / 3 = 0.40 mass Fe3O4= 0.40 mol x 231.541 g/mol= 92.6 g Moles H2O in excess = 2.0 - 1.6 = 0.4 mass H2O = 0.4 mol x 18 = 7.2 g
