Can you add a filler to a blackpowder cartridge?
Q. I recently purchased a Sharps rifle chambered for the .45-120 cartridge. I would like to load some light loads for target practice but one cannot leave an airspace between the powder charge and the bullet. So, can I simply add a filler to the top of my powder charge? My thought is that I can put a card wad on top of the powder and then fill the rest of the case with something inert like cornmeal, cream of wheat, etc. I have found nothing in any of my books that addresses this issue ex cept in the case of using fillers in a muzzleloader to improve the seal to get more consistant muzzle velocities. I don't know if this use of fillers applies to blackpowder cartridges. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Note to pathfind: … [cont.]

A. Cream of Wheat is an old favorite. The grains are uniform and come closest to matching the powder. Another fav is that foam snake junk you find at Lowe's that you pre-fill gaps with before caulking. Addendum: Uniform grains mean uniform pressures and compactability between loads. Cornmeal can often vary from bag to bag and even *inside* the same bag. Uniform grains as close to similar as possible to your powder will tend to remain stratified and unmixed...uneven cornmeal can cause the powder to mix with the meal if the ammo is shaken too much. I had written an article about fillers a couple of years back and posted to the black powder groups but I can't seem to find a copy of it. I'm typing this from memory so excuse any typos...s [cont.]
