A handgun is a firearm designed to be held and operated by one hand, with the other hand optionally supporting the shooting hand. This characteristic differentiates handguns as a general class of firearms from their larger counterparts: long guns such as rifles and shotguns (which are held in both hands and usually braced against the shoulder), mounted weapons such as machine guns and autocannons, and larger weapons such as artillery.

Some handgun subtypes include derringers, single-shot pistols, revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, pepperboxes, and machine pistols.

The overlapping variations in meaning of the words "pistol" and "handgun" are discussed below.

What year were the first modern Handguns made?
Q. What year were the first modern Handguns made? The guns that people can buy now. What year were those made, i think for the army? and can you give a source?

A. If by modern you mean cartridge revolver and not a cap and ball front stuffer The answer would be 1857 S&W produced and marketed a .22 cartridge pistol in that year It was developed a few year earlier but Colt had a patent on the only reliable revolving cylinder design that did not expire until 1857 The 1873 was not even close to the first The bored through cylinder was patented by S&W in 1854 Many Europeans infringed on that patent and produced cartridge revolvers before the American Civil War The 1873 was not even Colt's first cartridge revolver the 1871 Open Top was The 1858 Remington was being produced as a cartridge revolver as early 1868

What is a fair price for these two handguns?
Q. I have recently taken up shooting for sport and found I really enjoyed shooting both the Glock 17 and S&W 619. I want to begin comparison shopping local gun shops for both firearms but don't have any frame of reference re: price aside from MSRP. What is a realistic, yet fair price to look for for each of these handguns? Thanks!

A. A fair price for the Glock 17 would probably be somewhere between $450-$550 depending on whether it is new or used. I recommend buying a new one. For the S&W 619, you will probably end up spending at least $650...but $700 is a fair price on it. Again, I recommend getting a new one. I never recommend buying a used revolver. In response to below...check the S&W Web site, their price for a NEW one is $711...yes a new one. The manufacturer always keeps a back stock of their firearms. Like I said in my post (which people are mysteriously voting negatively against) you could find a used one for cheaper but as I said, I recommend a new one which will be more expensive. Like you said, they only made them for a few years, which would cause new… [cont.]

Do so many American men own handguns because they are afraid?
Q. In most civilized countries (Canada, Europe, Asia, Australasia) only police have guns and men are men without handguns. Why are American men different? I did not imply the USA was "uncivilized" as some suggested. I meant that other similarly civilized countries don't see the need for their people to own devices whose only function is to kill other people.

A. Americans live in a country of fear, because so many people have guns its necessary for the others to have guns to protect themselves so it turns out most of the country ends up with them.
