A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls. The raised areas of the rifling are called "lands," which make contact with the projectile (for small arms usage, called a bullet), imparting spin around an axis corresponding to the orientation of the weapon. When the projectile leaves the barrel, the conservation of angular momentum improves accuracy and range, in the same way that a properly thrown American football or rugby ball behaves. The word "rifle" originally referred to the grooving, and a rifle was called a "rifled gun." Rifles are used in warfare, hunting and shooting sports.

Typically, a bullet is propelled by the contained deflagration of an explosive compound (originally black powder, later cordite, and now nitrocellulose), although other means such as compressed air are used in air rifles, which are popular for vermin control, hunting small game, formal target shooting and casual shooting ("plinking").

In most armed forces the term "gun" is incorrect when referring to small arms; in the military, the word "gun" means an artillery piece or crew-served machine gun. Furthermore, in many works of fiction a rifle refers to any weapon that has a stock and is shouldered before firing, even if the weapon is not rifled or does not fire solid projectiles. (e.g. a "laser rifle")

Rifles traditionally fired a single projectile with each pull of the trigger. Modern assault rifles are capable of firing in bursts or fully automatic modes, and thus overlap somewhat with machine guns. In fact, many light machine guns (such as the Russian RPK) are adaptations of existing assault rifle designs. Generally, the difference between an automatic rifle and a machine gun comes down to weight and feed system; rifles, with their relatively light components (which overheat quickly) and small magazines, are incapable of sustained automatic fire in the way that machine guns are. While machine guns may require more than one operator, the rifle is an individual weapon.

What is the cheapest way to get into shooting rifles?
Q. This weekend I shoot a 22 rifle for the time. What is a cheap but decent brand for rifles? Also, where is the best place (preferably online) to find used rifles?

A. To get started a .22LR is the best choice there is. Rimfire ammo, .22LR especially is a tiny fraction of the price of small centerfire rounds like .223 or .308. A Ruger 10/22 as another guy suggested, is an awesome choice. There's no need to buy a used .22, they're quite cheap. Plus, as you learn more and get into it, 10/22's are the absolute best for customizing. There are a million different things you can do, put higher quality barrels on, optics, anything you want. The 77/22 they make is good too if you want a bolt-action. If you're just getting a .22 any local gunstore will have one of these, but Gunbroker is a good site, it's like E-bay for firearms. I'd just buy new though for a .22.

How often were repeating rifles used in the Civil War?
Q. Started playing this Civil War video game and most of the weapons used are repeating rifles. Now from what I remember, those were just being developed during that time, and were rarely used during that war, and this game is making it look like that was all that was used.

A. Bravo to Uncle Billy. The primary weapons were single-shot breech-loading rifles, MANY units were armed with OLD surplus MUSKETS from the British. Repeating Rifles were RARE, The War Department refused to purchase them !! A FEW Cavalry units had repeaters purchased by their commanding officers or State governments. Almost ALL repeating rifles in the had on a Southerner would have been captured. I would IMAGING that the video game uses repeating rifles because a game-player might not have the patience or "video-courage" to stand on the skirmish line and reload a single-shot.

How do you find out what type of rifles you have?
Q. We inherited some guns when my father passed away, they were also my grandfather's & possibly my great grandfathers... I have no real knowledge of guns (other than what they look like) so my question is how do I find out what types of rifles we have in our possession & how do I find out what they are worth? Needing this answer fairly soon.

A. First off DO NOT for any reason let a pawn shop value these firearms for you. There in the business to offer low and sell high. Second, if these are handed down for several generations you need to have a proper appraisal done. I have an extensive gun collection and a few of mine are over the $50,000 mark. The easiest way to get an appraisal done is to call your homeowners insurance carrier, explain that you have received a collection of antique firearms and you want to know who they would recommend to appraise them. This allows you to have a fair market price and a replacement price issued for each piece. Yes this will cost you a few dollars but with this done you have an accurate value that your insurance company cannot dispute. One… [cont.]
