I want to start a consulting business to help small businesses cut costs, how do I get customers?
Q. I am a 6 Sigma Master Black Belt. 6 Sigma is a statistical methodology that focuses on making decisions based on data. I want to start a consulting business that helps small businesses cut their costs using 6 Sigma methodologies. What would be the best approach to letting small businesses find out about my services. I propose to charge based on a percentage of the 1st year's savings to the client (ie 30%) of total savings. I am certified in Project Management and Training of 6 Sigma. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

A. Companies hire 'consultants' for a range of services- usually to get expertise or guidance when they don't have the capabilities in-house. Sounds like you are headed to management consulting, and as the name implies, companies would hire you to help direct their company through either improving their operations, or navigating complex business deals. Generally, management consulting firms conslidate talent from industry and leading business schools, and offer that expertise back to firms to help them improve their bottom line. Example: the firm where I worked, would go to a Fortune 100 firm say "we can help you improve your business processes saving you x number of dollars, and our fee would come out of those savings". Best place in South Florida to start a Small Business IT Consulting Company?
Q. I am thinking of starting another SMB Consulting practice in South East Florida. We recently sold our Managed Services company and we are moving to take a couple years off. I know the itch is going to need scratched (to start another venture) so I would like to move to an area where there are lots of small businesses (not mom and pop cuban pizza delivery operations like in Doral). For any who know the areas and a little about being an IT consultant, where would you suggest if you were planning another startup?

A. Small business owners around FL make one similar mistake - being underfunded. This is a great time to start a business because it is cheap, but the cost of running the business is still the same. Location is important, but so is having capital. Consider researching "strong business credit" - this is the topic a lot of people look at for business credit in general.
