Q. Thanks to laser altimeters, satellite photography and many other technologies, we can see that the oceans are rising 2 mm per year. For americans that's about 1 inch every 12 years. However, we've also seen vast areas of polar ice melting away, to the point where ships can now take short cuts through the northern polar regions. Given that a complete meltdown can cause several metres rise in sea level, why are we only seeing a steady 2 mm rise per year... ? Answered by skatespeed55 - Mon Nov 17 09:10:41 2008 Does a radar altimeter indicate correctly in turns? Q. I suppose the beam is going down 'vertically' from the plane. Suppose I fly level over flat surface, and the RA indicates 1000 ft. Now I make a 30-degree bank; will the indication be 1000/cos30 = 1150 ft (as the beam is transmitted in the same direction), or will it stay at 1000 ft (corrected somehow)? Asked by Gergely - Fri Mar 20 15:17:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The most common technique is to limit the gain of the antennas to 10 dBi or less (which means they're not very directional), the range to 2,500 feet (so the return signal will be strong even if it's spread out), and to use quite a bit of power, up to 500mW. The net effect is that rather than a narrow beam straight down, you get more of a cone. You can bank 15 degrees or so and straight down will still be in the cone. This does cause some complications in the receiver design as the receiver will get a mix of signals reflected back to it from different parts of the ground that are in the cone. The altimeter honors the first signal it receives, which will be from the shortest path. The slant path will be longer, and so the altimeter will… [cont.] Answered by JoelKatz - Fri Mar 20 16:06:15 2009 Is there a catchy term for the instrument panel on an airplane?
Q. I need to produce a title for a company bulletin and an aviation/navigation theme is being considered--is there some lingo used to describe the basic instruments (altimeter, turn/bank indicator, etc)?? Asked by JEFFREY K - Wed Aug 23 17:47:31 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. As a commercial pilot, I've heard of a few... Common ones I've heard are to refer to them as the "clocks" - e.g. to "have your head on the clocks" means to fly on instruments... Also, as mentioned, there are "glass cockpits" - or "flying on glass" - or sometimes the older analogue instruments are called the "steam gauges"... I'm not sure if this is much help, but I know of more terms and slang if you want it - so feel free to contact me too... :-) Answered by Bert from Oz - Wed Aug 23 20:18:24 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Altimeters" |
