A boat is a watercraft of modest size designed to float or plane, to provide passage across water. Usually this water will be inland (lakes) or in protected coastal areas. However, boats such as the whaleboat were designed to be operated from a ship in an offshore environment. In naval terms, a boat is something small enough to be carried aboard another vessel (a ship). Strictly speaking and quite uniquely a submarine is a boat as defined by the Royal Navy. Some boats too large for the naval definition include the Great Lakes freighter, riverboat, narrowboat and ferryboat. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I am an experienced dinghy sailor and racer, but i do not have a lot of big boat experience, i was wondering where there are courses to learn about big boats and what sort of official certifications there are that you need to crew on a boat. In general, there is no "official" certification required to crew on a larger boat, it's up to the skipper who he (or she) wants to take along. Having a background in dinghy racing, you probably already understand the Racing Rules of Sailing, and have a good grasp of racing tactics, both of which will help you find a spot on a boat. Check with local yacht clubs about racing schedules and show up ready to work - there's almost always a boat or two that is short handed and can use one more crew. Q. The panama canal connects 2 oceans right? shouldn't the worlds oceans be leveled with each other? why does the panama canal have to raise and lower boats to get to the other side? Asked by anthony m - Fri Aug 21 05:47:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Because the canal is not one continuous canal. There are actuually a couple of lakes between the two oceans that the canals connect with, Lake Gatun being the largest. Those lakes are above sea level thus the need to raise and lower ships via locks along the canal zone. It would have been much more difficult to cut a channel below sea level all the way across Panama. Here is a map of the canal zone: Answered by cyswxman - Fri Aug 21 06:03:25 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Boats" A boat is a watercraft, usually smaller than most ships.
