Heat treatment is a method used to alter the physical, and sometimes chemical, properties of a material. The most common application is metallurgical. Heat treatments are also used in the manufacture of many other materials, such as glass. Heat treatment involves the use of heating or chilling, normally to extreme temperatures, to achieve a desired result such as hardening or softening of a material. Heat treatment techniques include annealing, case hardening, precipitation strengthening, tempering and quenching. It is noteworthy that while the term heat treatment applies only to processes where the heating and cooling are done for the specific purpose of altering properties intentionally, heating and cooling often occur incidentally during other manufacturing processes such as hot forming or welding.

Heat treating and gem?
Q. I need step by step instructions on how to heat treat a gem (particulaly a topaz). I would like to know how to, and I don't want to have to buy anything.

A. Sorry but you are not going to be able to do this at home without buying an electric furnace which is fitted with precise temperature controls. ( +/- 5deg.C.) If you are going to treat sapphire it will also have to go up to around 1900 deg.C. It is possible to heat a small sample of topaz in a test tube to see colour change but heating a gem is a completely different matter. If the heating or cooling is too rapid the stone will crack or shatter and in some cases go cloudy as well. Do a Google search on heat treatment and you will find a number of companies who heat treat stones at quite a reasonable cost - certainly cheaper that the cost of totally wrecking your stone.

A. I've been there girl. I'm still there now, my hair is chin length, and while it looks cute on me (according to the boyfriend), the growing it out thing is so difficult. Honestly, the only way to do this is to allow your follicles to do their thing. You need to help them out a bit with masks and stuff, use things like avocado, egg yolk and olive oil (it's not "gross", they're brilliant home remedies that really do work wonders - i put mayonnaise on my hair weekly, and the smell doesn't linger, and my hair feels gorgeous afterwards - it's the protein and the moisturising qualities in the egg and the oil). Also, use a good shampoo and conditioner, like the Oatmeal and Honey line from Bedhead, or Redken's Extreme range. Fekkai are also very… [cont.]
