How much do I charge if I travel 80 miles for consulting work?
Q. Currently I am charging $100 an hour for consulting work in Orange County, CA. In a few months I will move to San Diego, CA and will have to travel about 80 miles to see clients in Orange County. Do I keep charging $100 an hour or do I increase it slightly because of travel and gas? I own my consulting company. It's just me so I don't have to report to anyone or get approval. I was mostly concerned with NEW clients who don't know my fees yet. I travel to client's homes for the consulting. I charge about the same as a consultant charges who have clients come to their home. A. how many miles to the gal. does your vehicle get? If you get 20 miles to the gal it will take you 4 gal of gas to reach your destination. Multiply that 4 gals by the price per gallon you are paying. Now x that by 2 (round trip). Then figure how long it will take you to make the round trip. Subtract from from your days earnings, gas, time to go to and from , and your meals. You can also figure wear and tear on your vehicle if you want. Take that number and divide it by the number of hrs you were with the client. That should give you a pretty close figure on what you are actually charging your client.

What is the percentage that I will have to pay on a consulting job?
Q. I am doing a consulting job and was able to get out 5,000 in 2007. And the other 13-15,000 will be in 2008. How much taxes will I have to pay on this $5,000? Thanks.

A. SE is self employed tax. You see, when you are employed the taxes that you pay are only half of the requires amount. The employer splits that tax with you. So the gentleman, before me is saying that with the consulting job that is considered self employment income you will have to pay the tax of your tax bracket plus the addition SE tax. Assuming you have made between 32K-77K and are single that puts you in the 25% bracket and with the additional SE tax you are looking at paying 2000 dollars on that income.

Is economics a good major to enter management consulting or private equity?
Q. I'm planning on majoring in economics, but considering business, for my bachelors degree. Is econ good for a top consulting firm? What about something in private equity, venture capitalist?

A. Economics is certainly a good choice but the top management consulting firms hire people from all types of majors. Ultimately they want people who have shown strong analytical skills. You can get this from economics, business, finance, bio-chem, engineering, etc... For private equity, most of the top firms prefer to hire people with experience. Investment and commercial banking are the best places to start if you want to move into private equity. The best majors for banking are similar to the above -- anything with strong analytics. And one last piece of advice -- major in something for which you have a passion. Not only will you enjoy it more but you will get better grades and improve your attractiveness to employers.
