How do I start a consulting business with very little start-up capital?
Q. I am interested in building on my expertise in non-profit management, organizational development, and strategic planning. There seem to be very few consulting firms that occupy this particular space, particularly in the categories of interim-CEO/Executive Director, non-profit company restructuring, strategic planning. However, most consulting firms that appear to be successful have far more infrastructure than I can afford to develop. I would love to get advice about how to launch a consulting firm with limited resources for the start-up.

A. Your expertise is the key to success in this field, but you are right -- the big firms have the infrastructure that shouts "we are good." I have been in your position. I started as a one-man, part-time consulting firm, and made it to global consulting. The keys: image and perception. In the Internet era, you can get a great web site that shows your skills quite well -- you can immediately compete with the big guys on "image" as a factor. Use low-cost technology to shine" a toll-free phone number to make it easy for clients anywhere to call you. A good "brand name" for your business can help a great deal. How do I put together a wardrobe consulting portfolio?
Q. I am brand new in the field and will be starting fashion school in august. However I have tons of fashion sense and want to start a miniature portfolio on what I believe is great fashion and some fashion basics for those I am consulting for. Is it okay to compile a portfolio with magazine clippings of high fashion lines, words (fashion, style etc.) and outfits as a beginning? Or is this a NO NO! Help is neededdd! FYI I am not a fashion designer...I do not sketch or draw.

A. You can use magazine clippings, however, I would strongly suggest using them for inspiration only. If you can sketch, choose your outfits from the clippings you have taken, and let it flow. Showing that you have creative and artistic skills will sway people to trust you more. Showing that you can cut and paste may make you seem organized, but may not quite deliver the fashion sense that you need to be a persuasive stylist.

A. You can check in the phone book's gov't page under licensing to determine if your locale will require a license. As for the home office deduction - this is one of the IRS's biggest flags on returns. In order to use a home office, the 'office' must be used exclusively for business. You cannot place a home office on your tax return if you business is run out of your den, your living room or from your dining room table. It must be used exclusively for the conduct of your business, and strangely as it may seem, if you choose to do your personal banking or web surfing from that room, you immediately disprove the allowance.
