Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. The technique has been applied in the study of mathematics and logic since before Aristotle, though analysis as a formal concept is a relatively recent development. The word is a transcription of the ancient Greek Ανάλυσις (analusis), "a breaking up" (from ana- "up, throughout" + lysis "a loosening"). As a formal concept, the method has variously been ascribed to Ibn al-Haytham, René Descartes (Discourse on the Method) and Galileo Galilei. That being said, the novel primarily concerns itself with conscience and redemption. Raskolnikov convinces himself that he can murder with impunity through a Nietzschean-like process, convincing himself that he is outside the moral structure that exists to control lesser men. Sonia represents traditional Christian morality and the chance for redemption. Although Raskolnikov is subjected to legal repercussions for his crimes, the real punishment indicated by the title is the internal conflict and pain he suffers as a result of his violation of true moral and ethical strictures.
