Forensic science (often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest to a legal system. This may be in relation to a crime or a civil action. Besides its relevance to a legal system, more generally forensics encompasses the accepted scholarly or scientific methodology and norms under which the facts regarding an event, or an artifact, or some other physical item (such as a corpse) are ascertained as being the case. In that regard the concept is related to the notion of authentication, whereby an interest outside of a legal form exists in determining whether an object is what it purports to be, or is alleged as being.

The word forensic comes from the Latin adjective forensis, meaning "of or before the forum". In Roman times, a criminal charge meant presenting the case before a group of public individuals in the forum. Both the person accused of the crime and the accuser would give speeches based on their side of the story. The individual with the best argument and delivery would determine the outcome of the case. Basically, the person with the sharpest forensic skills would win. This origin is the source of the two modern usages of the word forensic – as a form of legal evidence and as a category of public presentation.

In modern use, the term "forensics" in place of "forensic science" can be considered incorrect as the term "forensic" is effectively a synonym for "legal" or "related to courts". However, the term is now so closely associated with the scientific field that many dictionaries include the meaning that equates the word "forensics" with "forensic science".

Can forensics gather blood on one pretense and use it against you on another?
Q. If forensics gets permission from a suspect to test blood for a bacterial infection or something similar, can that blood legally be tested against DNA that was found at a crime scene and hold up in a court of law? Thank you everyone for your answers. I am currently working on my suspense thriller, Anonymous, inspired by a true story. The interviews and interrogations have taken months of research and I am very close to being politically correct. I studied creative writing at Baldwin Wallace College and Cleveland State University. I am a freelance writer and have published in The Cleveland Plain Dealer. If anyone would like to critique this short section, I would be more than happy to provide it.

Q. I'm in high school, and there is a forensics team, but I've never really thought about it. But I might want to join, except I don't know what you do on a forensics team?

A. Hi there :). Forensics is basically speech and debate. You reinforce and improve your presentation/public speaking skills--there is absolutely no doubt that it helps in the classroom & in academic skills. Depending on what the team offers, there are a variety of events in the whole scheme of forensics. They will likely place you according to your interests/personality, etc. There are three major groups-- speech, interpretation, and debate. Various speeches are OO (original oratory), OA (original advocacy), Expos (expository-an informative speech), Extempt (Extemporaneous- not a prepared speech, based on current events), Impromptu (not a prepared speech; you are given 2-3 minutes to prepare for a 5 minute speech), OPP (original prose and… [cont.]

A. You will need at least a bachelors if you do not want to be just a 'technician' in the field. What major? Depends on what type of forensics you want to do. The link provided gives some more info.
