Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions.

Meanings

There also are two slightly different meanings of safety. For example, home safety may indicate a building's ability to protect against external harm events (such as weather, home invasion, etc), or may indicate that its internal installations (such as appliances, stairs, etc) are safe (not dangerous or harmful) for its habitants.

Limitations

Safety can be limited in relation to some guarantee or a standard of insurance to the quality and unharmful function of an object or organization. It is used in order to ensure that the object or organization will do only what it is meant to do.

It's important to realize that safety is relative. Eliminating all risk, if even possible, would be extremely difficult and very expensive. A safe situation is one where risks of injury or property damage are low and manageable.

Types of safety

It is important to distinguish between products that meet standards, that are safe, and those that merely feel safe. The highway safety community uses these terms:

Normative safety

Normative safety is a term used to describe products or designs that meet applicable design standards.

How could a neighborhood use Twitter for crime/safety alerts and prevention?
Q. Looking for specific examples on how neighbors could use a service like Twitter to improve safety/security? For example, send a Tweet if a suspicious person is spotted along with location, etc. Other examples? Well, since learning that only one person can tweet into a Twitter feed, I guess Twitter is out of the question for this application. If anyone knows of a service that would allow *everyone* on the distribution to contribute, please let us know about it! Thanks!!

Any ideas on how to start up a safety program in my office?
Q. I work in an office building and my boss has asked me to put together a short everyday meeting each morning to bring up some keys points of office safety. 1) Any ideas on common office safety or that which is not normally thought of? This is to involve all aspects, not just in the actual work envrionment ie. the parking lot, elevator etc. 2) What do you think that the best way to present this is? 3) Any fun ideas?

A. Insurance Loss Control departments are a good place to start, but unless you have a large enough policy,,, their efforts are less than complete. OSHA is a great place,,, consultative services. You can find stuff here, have them come out, etc. etc. etc. They also have some publications just for office safey. The NC OSHA website is a good one, and you can find the publications. If your company belongs to any trade associations,,, these can also be a wealth of information. Now,,, with an office,,, you are going to run out of material real fast if you are doing a daily meeting. Let me knock down your work load by about 80%,,, do a WEEKLY topic. Now, let's see if you can come up with 52 topics for office safety. Look over the free… [cont.]

How do you remove the clutch safety switch?
Q. I can see a nut on the front of the bracket holding the safety switch but it looks like it is spot welded.

A. If you remove this switch you may not be able to start your car It can be bypassed with a jumper wire but I wouldn't recommend it. But for the purpose of the question this is how to remove it. Unhook the wire or unplug it. and turn the switch out by hand or a pair of pliers. The nut you are looking at is just there for the switch to thread into. There may be a vinyl nut there for adjusting the distance the switch is from the pedal. But it should come out easy. Ignore the welded nut!
