A valve is a device that regulates the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. Valves are also found in the human body. For example, there are several heart valves which control the flow of blood in the chambers of the heart and maintain the correct pumping action. Valves are used in a variety of contexts, including industrial, military, commercial, residential, and transportation. The industries in which the majority of valves are used are oil and gas, power generation, mining, water reticulation, sewerage and chemical manufacturing. Plumbing valves, such as taps for hot and cold tap water are the most noticeable types of valves. Other valves encountered on a daily basis include gas control valves on cookers, small valves fitted to washing machines and dishwashers, and safety devices fitted to hot water systems. Valves may be operated manually, either by a hand wheel, lever or pedal. Valves may also be automatic, driven by changes in pressure, temperature, or flow. These changes may act upon a diaphragm or a piston which in turn activates the valve, examples of this type of valve found commonly are safety valves fitted to hot water systems or boilers. More complex control systems using valves requiring automatic control based on an external input (i.e., regulating flow through a pipe to a changing set point) require an actuator. An actuator will stroke the valve depending on its input and set-up, allowing the valve to be positioned accurately, and allowing control over a variety of requirements. Valves are also found in the Otto cycle (internal combustion) engines driven by a camshaft, tappets or push rods where they play a major role in engine cycle control. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by Claire M - Sat Dec 27 21:17:34 2008 - - 1 Answers - 2 Comments A. By running the scales for an hour or two every day. Yeah! they are boring but the rote of doing this helps to set the valve action in your brain. The more you run the scales the better fixed in your mind the actions for each note becomes. I get tired of hearing the scales my granddaughter runs on her Clarinet and the scales my grandson runs on his trumpet. But I do know that is the only way to get really good at playing an instrument of any sort. My father is facing problem in heart valve blockage. His two valves are blocked .(one is blocked 91% and another 75%) He is having a heavy pain in his left arm and leg. What is the best treatment with low medicines as he hate to use more. Asked by praveen s - Tue May 22 05:25:57 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. His heart valves are not blocked, his coronary arteries, the blood vessels that deliver blood to the heart muscle itself are blocked...I would ask his heart specialist for recommendations for treatment. No medicine or dietary changes will make these blockages go away, only possibly prevent worsening and help his heart function despite this problem. Q. I just moved into a house and there is nowhere to place the bended drainage pipe that runs from my washer. There is a small white box that has the 2 water valves but no hole to put the drainage tube into. What should I do?? Oh, and i bought the house, I am not renting. You can run the drain there. Is there a spot for a sink nearby? Maybe the sellers took the sink with them. Some of the plastic water hook-ups have a pop-out hole for the drain between the valves. But if it was never hooked up, you'll have to run a line to your main drain. Is there any sort of drainpipe in the laundry room or basement or whatever room the hook-ups are in? Might be just as simple as attaching a washing machine line up to it. Answered by PropReno - Sun Mar 22 16:34:48 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Valves"
