Q. What corrective action is needed if someone was paid excess salary by a consulting company and said person has also filed taxes with the W2 received, without noticing the error. Does the person file for an ammended tax return for the prior year or does this need to be done for next tax year? If excess is reclaimed by consulting company, what happens to taxes already paid and to social security taxes already paid? Has anyone faced this situation of reporting Gross Amount in a year and returning money and having to report lesser Gross for past year via ammended tax returns? Answered by Lets Go Magic! - Thu Mar 20 04:57:28 2008 How much do I charge if I travel 80 miles for consulting work? Q. Currently I am charging $100 an hour for consulting work in Orange County, CA. In a few months I will move to San Diego, CA and will have to travel about 80 miles to see clients in Orange County. Do I keep charging $100 an hour or do I increase it slightly because of travel and gas? I own my consulting company. It's just me so I don't have to report to anyone or get approval. I was mostly concerned with NEW clients who don't know my fees yet. I travel to client's homes for the consulting. I charge about the same as a consultant charges who have clients come to their home. Typo: I charge the same as a consultant who has clients come to their OFFICE. Michelle you have a great point. If you get 20 miles to the gal it will take you 4 gal of gas to reach your destination. Multiply that 4 gals by the price per gallon you are paying. Now x that by 2 (round trip). Then figure how long it will take you to make the round trip. Subtract from from your days earnings, gas, time to go to and from , and your meals. You can also figure wear and tear on your vehicle if you want. Take that number and divide it by the number of hrs you were with the client. That should give you a pretty close figure on what you are actually charging your client. Q. I'm planning on majoring in economics, but considering business, for my bachelors degree. Is econ good for a top consulting firm? What about something in private equity, venture capitalist? Asked by Brian H - Sun Jan 13 00:04:45 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Economics is certainly a good choice but the top management consulting firms hire people from all types of majors. Ultimately they want people who have shown strong analytical skills. You can get this from economics, business, finance, bio-chem, engineering, etc... For private equity, most of the top firms prefer to hire people with experience. Investment and commercial banking are the best places to start if you want to move into private equity. The best majors for banking are similar to the above -- anything with strong analytics. And one last piece of advice -- major in something for which you have a passion. Not only will you enjoy it more but you will get better grades and improve your attractiveness to employers.
