A commodity is something for which there is demand, but which is supplied without qualitative differentiation across a market. It is a product that is the same no matter who produces it, such as petroleum, notebook paper, or milk. In other words, copper is copper. The price of copper is universal, and fluctuates daily based on global supply and demand. Stereos, on the other hand, have many levels of quality. And, the better a stereo is [perceived to be], the more it will cost.

One of the characteristics of a commodity good is that its price is determined as a function of its market as a whole. Well-established physical commodities have actively traded spot and derivative markets. Generally, these are basic resources and agricultural products such as iron ore, crude oil, coal, ethanol, salt, sugar, coffee beans, soybeans, aluminum, rice, wheat, gold and silver.

Commoditization occurs as a goods or services market loses differentiation across its supply base, often by the diffusion of the intellectual capital necessary to acquire or produce it efficiently. As such, goods that formerly carried premium margins for market participants have become commodities, such as generic pharmaceuticals and silicon chips.

What do you think about Oppenheimers Commodity Fund?
Q. What do you think about the Commodity Strategy Total Return Fund. It looks good are there better ones that you like. Morningstar only gives it 2 stars.
Asked by Peggy K - Mon Jul 28 13:13:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have to keep in mind that past fund performance is not an indicator of future performance. I have never been a fan of Morningstar. Most funds have high ratings, they are very biased in my view catering advertising fees from the industry that they rate. I would not give a Morningstar rating any creditability as a deciding factor to invest in a fund. Commodities have broken all kinds of support levels on the charts, and unless you can go short, I would avoid them. I think the run is over now, as the global economy has greater evidence of lower demand from an economic slow down.

What does an Agricultural Commodity Broker do?
Q. I am doing a project and I have absolutely no idea what the freak an Agricultural Commodity Broker is. Can someone help?
Asked by Maddie Lilliann - Fri Jan 23 11:18:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure! A broker is somebody who acts as a middleman between somebody who is buying something--usually an investment in the Wall Street sense of the word--and somebody who is selling the same thing. The broker charges a fee, called a commission, for matching up the buyer and the seller. A commodity broker is somebody who matches up buyers and sellers of commodities, that is, of actual physical goods. Some examples of commodities are oil, natural gas, gold, beef, pork bellies, corn, and wheat. The important point is that commodities have to be essentially interchangeable with each other: one barrel of natural gas has to be just as valuable, and no more valuable, than another barrel in order to make it a commodity, and one boxcar of corn… [cont.]
