New House, what structured networking devices do I need for FIOS?
Q. Just closed escrow... it is a new house, with Cat 5e running to 9 locations in the house, and Coax to 9 locations as well. Inside my communications panel on my exterior garage wall, I have 9 Cat 5e cables running into the box and 9 Coax cables running into the same box. I have a power outlet installed in the box as well. What do I need to get to make my system ready for FIOS? We have TV, DATA, and Voice available. Can the Cat 5e cables run both voice and data or do I have to use them as dedicated data lines only, and use verizons VoIP? I was looking at the structured wiring panels by levition... is that the route I need to go?

A. You shouldn't have to worry about special network devices to run FIOS. It is up to the FIOS provider around your area to give you those devices. All you have to worry about is your CAT5 connections. And yes, you can run data and voice over a single CAT5 cable. The CAT5 cables have 8 wires, only 4 are used for data. For telephone (voice), only 2 wires are needed, and you still have a spare 2 wires for an extra voice line. Have the FIOS provider give you the devices you need. They have this setup in Beaumont, CA where my dad lives and the FIOS provider provided everything that we needed, even the wireless router. We did not really have to have anything else, except a network cable to connect the computer to the wall.
