Can I get books on consignment to start a bookstore?
Q. I would like to open a children's bookstore, but I know the cost of stocking to books will be enormous. Does anyone know of any place where you can get books on consignment?

A. Ah ha...and when they don't sell, will you be able to pay return shipping?...after paying rent, utilities. You need to start thinking - write a business plan.

How do I start a store selling factory seconds?
Q. Where do I start? Where do I get stock from? Is it possible to sell on consignment? I can see a potential for a store in my area that sells a variety of goods at a competitive price and that gives friendly, customer orientated service. I thought maybe factory seconds would give cash flow while establishing the store to sell other goods. I will have to lease a shop...would like eventually to build a large chain of them...

A. You'll need to contact the factories and see what you need to do to be able to bid on them or buy them outright. No factory or manufacturer does stuff via consignment. You'll need to get a shop Setup some purchasing contracts and purchase initial stock Get all your licensing in place to sell retail get all your marketing in place Then Best of luck

How do I sell my items?
Q. I crochet items with thread: doilies, crosses, crinoline girls, etc. and was curious how to go about selling my items (consignment or resale) to local flower and gift shops. Would it be best to build up my stock before approaching them, or would it be ok to just give them a taste of what I have to offer and what is available to them? Can anyone help me?

A. Consignment selling is a start. Go to the local flower shop and ask them if you can have your item displayed 'for sale', make them a good deal and see what comes of it. A friend of mine did it with African Beads and he made some bucks that way.

Indian Taxes : MVAT/CST?
Q. Pl. explain to me in detail what is branch/consignment stock transfer in relation to VAT/CST and how does it help to reduce taxes. Please give an illustration explaining the effects (in relation to taxes) of the branch transfer to both consignor and consignee .
Asked by happy - Sun Aug 6 01:36:51 2006 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. If you are a manufacturer producing goods at a Factory but have sales depot at various other locations and wish to transfer goods to that location, you may do so without payment of CST. However you may have to pay Excise Duty once the goods are removed from the factory, however that duty can be availed as credit at ur sales location. About CST, you can transfer goods against a specified challan ( I think it is Form H, pls ensure that) Once you raise an invoice mentioning Stock Transfer against the specified form, you need not shell out CST. Only at the point of sale the goods would be subject to Sales Tax.

A. Seems to me that the $300 consignment income will be earned from the middle of June (setup date) to the end of June. signing the agreement does not warrant a journal entry. What happened by the end of June? You earned $300 or consignment income, you collected $1,600 in cash (presumably all sales are cash sales) so you owe the consignor $1,300. You don't have any consignment expenses. The entry should be: Cash 1,600 cr Payable to consignor 1,300 cr consignment revenue 300 cr

How much longer with the Dixie Chicks last? one half of their sales were distributor sales with buyback?
Q. Sales from their last CD were not accurate. What we were not told was that the sells reported were consignments to Distributors - because the Dixie Chicks have a Buy back clause in their distributor contracts instead of a "return unsold" agreement. The agreement also states that they have to buyback stock not sold at a higher price than the distributor paid for the inventory to compensate for stock space. This is done with many artists.

A. Regardless of what method you're talking about, the Dixie Chicks are the highest selling female group of all time, in any genre. This is a fact. With their 5 Grammy wins and fearless determination to take on a bunch of ignorant conservatives, I can't see them bowing out any time soon. The comment Natalie Maines made was a jumpstart for this awesome new record.

Remington 700P resale value?
Q. In the process of trying to sell my 700P for a Springfield M1A. The rifle is like new, (under 100 rounds) and is equipped with Super Sniper 16x42 scope, and Harris Bipod. 26 inch barrel, HS Precision stock, .308. The rifle alone cost me $900, the scope was $300 and the bipod was around $90. What would be a decent price to sell or put on consignment?

A. You might get $700 if you leave the bipod and scope on... without... maybe $600 The rifle is worth more... maybe. But, the used gun market is full of deals. If I could buy a brand new one for only a few more dollars, I assure you I would. But again, you may get lucky! - Good Luck!

A theory that proves that people consume/buy products just b/c they are available (i.e. candy at checkout) ?
Q. I work in pharma consignment. We sell life saving drugs by stocking them at acute care hospital facilities and only charging our customers when they use them. I have developed a hunch that our customers tend to use additional amounts of products simply because they would rather error on the side of making sure the patient is safe. For instance, instead of using 6 vials, they may use 7 vials just to be sure. In the past, before we offered this program, our cusomters would buy the expensive products and store them on their shelves. If they ever ran out (and believe me hospitals make small errors like this frequently) it may take 24 hours before they would receive more product. This may cause them to be more cautious about usage levels.… [cont.]

A. Good theory, but your example has a flaw. Your theory suggests that people consume because it's available. I actually like the theory, however you should use a different example to back it up. In example 1 where your company stocks the shelves the doctors do not have to worry about running out of a product hence their main concern is to help that patient in front of them, no matter the cost. In example 2 the doctors have to be concerned about the patient in front of them and the next one to come though because there may be a shortage due to clerical error, hence they will use the absolute minimum necessary to ensure adequate care for current and future victims. The potential for shortage is eliminated in example 1. Anyway, like the… [cont.]

Chapter 7 and business partnership?
Q. I am a 50% partner in a US based LLC and supply goods on a consignment basis to the US company from another company I solely own which is located in Europe. My business partner in the US company has filed for Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy and the stock supplied by my European company (which has not been sold or paid for) is now being held by the Trustee for disposal. What should I do? Can his personal bankruptcy affect out jointly owned business? My partner owns 50% of the US company but has no shareholding in my European company which supplied the goods. I have not received any payment for the goods on consignment.

A. I suggest you re-post your question in the law section. The Trustee should not be able to hold assets of the LLC - it could be that he or she is not aware of the ownership of the stock.

How many bottles did the wine importer have when he started? 2 h o c u s + p o c u s = p r… [cont.]

2002 Firehawk with L-88.?
Q. I found a 2002 Fire hawk with L-88 of which there are 300. 425 Hp and 515 torque. Tranny was cooked as kid , for whatever reason did neutral drops. Was replaced and was also hit in rear. Fixed but was more then 3000.00 so shows on Carfax. Work was done by a mechanic who is also a friend . Wants only 3500.00 as it is on consignment . Balance of loan and insurance deductible. How much would this hurt resale as in in perfect condition gets 35,000.00. Fastest car (Stock on road). Been appraising cars for 15 years and cannot find a value for this with accident. tranny was original just new parts put back as T. converter was cracked in half. Runs like new now but still leary. This one was 3rd built and is signed ect as were hand built… [cont.]

A. Well, obviously you wont get anywhere near $30K. But, if the body was redone well, showing no waves and the such, I could see you reselling this car and turning a profit. If this car drives fine and doesn't have a weird feel about it, I think you should take him up on this offer. These cars are in demand and always will be. I feel that if this car has no visual damage (ie. poor bodywork, poor paint matching) you might sell the car in the high teens. You could fish around and list the car for 20 something, hoping to attract a well-off pontiac gear head that doesn't care about the previous history. I am almost certain that this car will easily bring 14-20K. I would jump on this deal and try to sell it rather than keep it for a while. That… [cont.]

I have a huge vent...Buying saddles....?
Q. My daughter's semi-custom saddle, which we purchased end of August, has never fit properly. The tack shop suggested she ride in it for a while so the wool has time to settle. Less than 3 months later still doesn't fit. Her riding coach says Laura cannot ride in it as it is any longer. Went to tack shop today the owner says we should get it repacked, but if it still doesn't fit they will sell it on consignment for us or we can return it less 20% re-stocking fee. Are they kidding, the tack shop owner came to the barn measured the horse and we have to have the saddle repaired at our expense or we can return it but will cost us 20%. The saddle NEVER fit properly and it's only 3 months old and it COST $3000.00... May have to call the Lawyer on… [cont.]

A. I'm curious WHERE you had the saddle made! I've had 2 saddles made at Broken Horn (Western) but sounds like you're talking English and when you said "wool has time to settle" you're talking about the flocking. I'd have simply gone with a Stubben, because my old Siegfried's NEVER had an issue about fit, wether it were on a TB who needed weight or a nice round little Arab or QH. 20% is standard, BUT seeing how they actually came out, measured your horse and it doesn't fit, you may have a case if you have it all documented. Call a lawyer tomorrow morning and see if you have one. Don't forget to add the lawyer's costs on the settlement amount. Well for other saddles, what about Hermes? Then there's also Passier, Kieffer, Crump, Crosby… [cont.]

law of contract-consideration, intention, privity?
Q. BNG is the distributor of BLB's CD. Sour Records, a sub distributor, takes consignment of the CDs from BLB. There is a term in the agreement that Sour Records wont sell the CD for less than $19.90 and that anyone buying the CDs from Sour Records must maintain this price. Woodlands Music store took 50 CDs from Sour Records. The contract between Woodlands Music store and Sour Records also has a term to say that Woodlands Music store willnot sell the CD for less than $19.90. Sales of the CD are very bad. In order to clear their stocks, Woodlands Music store reduces the price if the CD to $19.90. When BNG discovers this, they threaten to sue Woodlands Music store. Advise Woodlands Music store. sorry. my error. woodlands intended to reduce… [cont.]

A. If you have got it right, Woodlands has acted entirely within the terms of the contract ie. they have not sold it for less than $19.90 but for exactly that. There are probably many considerations other than legal here though. You have a music distributor and a music store. Legally Woodlands can't lose.
