Q. I shoot a Benelli Nova and i was wondering what slugs people found shot the tightest groups, i've already found what shoots straight in my Nova, but i just got to wondering what brands and loads people had found the most accurate in their Novas. BTW i shoot a 24 inch smoothbore barrel with an improved cylinder choke. No offense, but all i really care about is what Nova owners have to say. Thanks! Answered by jesse - Mon Nov 9 22:55:01 2009 Federal brand rifled slugs.? Q. The box says: "The Federal Classic Rifled Slug with a proven, hollow point design and single piece wad delivers consistent performance, improved accuracy, and reduced felt recoil in smoothbore shotguns." Should I use these in a rifled barrel or should I get slugs without rifling? Asked by canoehunter - Wed Mar 5 12:27:51 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. the only reason there are rifling's on a rifled slug is to help it swage into a smoothbore barrel. I'm gonna catch some flak for saying this, but here goes... it does not make the slug rotate!!! I've done tests in several barrels in several brands of shotguns, and the rifling on the slugs do not do anything whatsoever for spin. (think about it, soft lead V.S. hard steel) However, these should pose no problem for your rifled shotgun, but you may find that saboted slugs foul your barrel less. Q. I bought a Mossberg 500 slugster combo with rifled barrel and bought sabot slugs which are very expensive. Is there a cheap sabot slug or an alternative if i just want to try the gun at the indoor range for about 20 rounds? Why would the brenneke slugs say its ok to use in either barrel if it will harm the barrel. I also heard if you use cheaper rifled slugs throught the rifled barrel that it will not damage it, but you will have to clean the lead out of the rifeling real well. Is any of this true? Thanks. Asked by david m - Mon Jan 14 22:30:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Personally I would use saboted or unrifled slugs for the rifled barrel. I'm not certain why the brenneke would be listed as ok to be used in a rifled barrel though. Its probably ok because the lead is soft enough to contact the rifling and not cause any damage but still allow the barrel rifling to impart spin to the slug. I'm just not knowledgeable on the slugs as I don't use them. However I saw the previous post and thought I should say that it is a very common misconception that the rifling on a brenneke and foster slug are used to impart a spin on the slug. The rifling is actually there to deform so that the slug can safely pass through a choke and is also used to increase velocity as there is less material contacting the bore of the… [cont.] Answered by David B - Mon Jan 14 23:55:52 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Shotguns and Smoothbores" See also:
