What is the smallest choke you can use in a smoothbore shotgun?
Q. What if I use slugs?
Asked by thetiemersmas@verizon.net - Sun Dec 7 17:09:01 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are xtra, xtra full turkey chokes. But the smallest choke you can use depends on what round you re shooting. Steel shot is not advised in a full choke. Lead shot can be shot in XX Full choke, but slugs should not be shot in full choke. So there are different chokes for all sorts of ammo types.

Which ammo for smoothbore shotgun? Rifled slugs or sabot slugs?
Q. Hunting Adirondack black bears
Asked by Lou T - Thu Sep 6 15:59:23 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Either slug can be fired through your smooth barrel, but a rifled slug cannot be fired through A rifled barrel. Rifled slugs have grooves on them, and it will hurt a rifled barrel, where the sabots wont hurt it. A rifled slug has better accuracy in a smooth barrel, which means longer ranges. Most slugs are good to aobut 100 yards, but new improvements made it possible to shoot out to 200 yards with a good slug and a good rifled barrel.

What shotgun ammo should I use?
Q. So, I just bought myself a Remington 870 Express 12 gauge shotgun... (Smoothbore barrel) And with it, I bought a pack of rifled slugs. But, I want to know if I can use birdshot, buckshot, game loads, target loads, etc. Such as the ones below: Lead Game Loads - 25 plastic shotshells Gun Club Target Loads - 25 plastic shotshells I mean using these if say I wanted to go shoot skeet, or I felt like doing some bird hunting, or even if I had to shoot a coyote (many around my house and I have a dog...) so yeah. I'd love some input on this. Also, when I bought the gun, the man who sold it said the barrel I bought (20" smoothbore) isn't for bird hunting I believe... so why would he say that?

A. You can shoot any 2 3/4 or 3" 12 gauge ammunition, although sabot slugs will be rather in accurate out of a non rifled barrel, and you should stick to rifled slugs for smooth bores. Target loads are good for skeet and plinking, but they aren't real good for critters. For coyote, I would recommend #4 buck shot. As for barrel length, most bird hunters use longer barrels, somewhere in the 26" or 28" length to give them a bit more range, and because they find that the longer barrels point better. However, with a little practice, you shouldn't have any trouble using a 20 inch barrel for trap or bird hunting. I've shot trap with both of my shotguns that have barrels in about that range. However, if you want the longer barrel, you can buy a 26"… [cont.]

Best Slug to Use in My Shotgun?
Q. I shoot a Benelli Nova and i was wondering what slugs people found shot the tightest groups, i've already found what shoots straight in my Nova, but i just got to wondering what brands and loads people had found the most accurate in their Novas. BTW i shoot a 24 inch smoothbore barrel with an improved cylinder choke. No offense, but all i really care about is what Nova owners have to say. Thanks!

A. you need to use different brands they may have different points of impact use the brand that hit the target and don't worry about pin point accuracy with a shotgun.

Federal brand rifled slugs.?
Q. The box says: "The Federal Classic Rifled Slug with a proven, hollow point design and single piece wad delivers consistent performance, improved accuracy, and reduced felt recoil in smoothbore shotguns." Should I use these in a rifled barrel or should I get slugs without rifling?
Asked by canoehunter - Wed Mar 5 12:27:51 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the only reason there are rifling's on a rifled slug is to help it swage into a smoothbore barrel. I'm gonna catch some flak for saying this, but here goes... it does not make the slug rotate!!! I've done tests in several barrels in several brands of shotguns, and the rifling on the slugs do not do anything whatsoever for spin. (think about it, soft lead V.S. hard steel) However, these should pose no problem for your rifled shotgun, but you may find that saboted slugs foul your barrel less.

I'm trying to understand double barrel "Regulation" better. Does it mean that if I point a double barrel?
Q. shotgun at a target, the two shots will end up different places? Let's say i'm using a smoothbore double with rifled slugs. I'm assuming both slugs wouldn't hit on the exact same spot. Is it okay to use rifled slugs in a smoothbore double barrel shotgun in the first place?
Asked by Skippy - Sun Oct 4 18:14:06 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. double shotguns are not the best choice for slug guns. Folks think that slugs can damage the rib and the way a double (o/U or SxS) is made ... some wont handle slug pressures. Doubles and regulation... remember-they are made to deliver shot loads. If you fire the barrels at the same point of aim... the shot patterns should overlap...sort of a figure 8 shaped shot dispersion. dont expect a double shotgun to "cloverleaf' slugs

Just brought my first shotgun,a mossberg590 A1?
Q. my question is,Is it ok to shoot rifle slugs throught a smoothbore barrel. Its has a heavier walled barrel.
Asked by semi - Fri Aug 28 10:48:33 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your Mossberg 590 has a cylinder bore barrel... And do you know what that means? It means you can shoot ANY 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch 12 guage shotgun cartridge you want thru it... That's right!... Buckshot, bird shot, trap loads, game loads and rifled (foster type) slugs... You can even safely shoot sabot slugs thru it -- Although I don't recommend sabots in you gun only because your barrel has no rifling so the results would be unpredictable shot groupings -- But still would be safe... As a matter of fact your shotgun is well suited for shooting this stuff also... Yikes!!! anyways --- Here a tutorial on slugs for your shotguns... This should clarify things...

Smooth bore musket (Guns)?
Q. Hi, Can a smoothbore musket fire a single lead ball, aswell as lead shot. Can it be used as a rifle and shotgun? Can you get smoothbore kentucky rifles, or do they all have rifled barrels? Is it true also that all recussion muskets have rifled barrles. I posted it here as most of you will be experts in Guns. Regards

A smooth-bore musket can fire a large diameter lead "musket ball" as well as shot. (Q2. Can you get smooth-bore Kentucky rifles, or do they all have rifled barrels? (A2. A Pennsylvania (or Kentucky if you prefer) rifle is by definition rifled. Any modern replica will be rifled. However, you might be able to find what I'm going to refer to as a false rifle. (If you do it will be quite rare and about 200 years old so I doubt you'll want to shoot it.) Occasionally trading companies would make smooth-bore muskets that matched the stock type and barrel diameter of Pennsylvania rifles. However they weren't popular since… [cont.]

.69 precussion smoothbore musket?
Q. Hi, can you help me? With a 1842 .69 smoothbore musket, what kind of powder charge should i use? I was thinking 110 grains of FFg, is that to much? And also, with a .69 roundball how much will this thing kick? I know blackpowders slow burning, but a .69 balls still alota mass to move, would it be like a shotgun slug? And one more thing, would it be good for taking a deer or something like that with? Hope you can help, and thanks!

A. 110gr. is kinda overkill, as well as waisting powder, not to mention that the ball may be distorted by the overpressure, making the shot even LESS accurate. Smooth-bores are notoriously inaccurate, and more powder won't help anything. If I were you, I'd start with 50-60gr, then work up to heavier charges, if you wanted to. With the 50+ charge, and the weight of the piece, the recoil will be less than a 12ga. shotgun. Once again, as inaccurate as these smooth-bores are, I wouldn't use one for deer hunting, as you'll be scaring many more than you will hit. Not only that, but the chance of a serious, non-fatal wound is FAR more likely, IF you do manage to score a hit. Save the musket for 'fun' shootin', and get a serious front-stuffer, like a… [cont.]
