A candle is a source of light, and sometimes a source of heat, consisting of a solid block of fuel (commonly wax) and an embedded wick.

Today, most candles are made from paraffin. Candles can also be made from beeswax, soy and other plant waxes, and tallow (a by-product of beef-fat rendering). Gel candles are made from a mixture of paraffin and plastic.

A candle manufacturer is traditionally known as a chandler. Various devices have been invented to hold candles, from simple tabletop candle holders, to elaborate chandeliers.

The heat of the match used to light the candle melts and vaporizes a small amount of fuel. Once vaporized, the fuel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a flame. This flame provides sufficient heat to keep the candle burning via a self-sustaining chain of events: the heat of the flame melts the top of the mass of solid fuel, the liquefied fuel then moves upward through the wick via capillary action, and the liquefied fuel is then vaporized to burn within the candle's flame.

The burning of the fuel takes place in several distinct regions (as evidenced by the various colors that can be seen within the candle's flame). Within the bluer regions, hydrogen is being separated from the fuel and burned to form water vapor. The brighter, yellower part of the flame is the remaining carbon being oxidized to form carbon dioxide.

As the mass of solid fuel is melted and consumed, the candle grows shorter. Portions of the wick that are not evaporating the liquid fuel are consumed in the flame. The incineration of the wick limits the exposed length of the wick, thus maintaining a constant burning temperature and rate of fuel consumption. Some wicks require regular trimming with scissors (or a specialized wick trimmer), usually to about one-quarter inch (~.7 cm), to promote slower, steady burning, and also to prevent smoking.

Would tealight candles set off a smoke detector?
Q. Me and my boyfirend were planning a romantic holiday and were wondering if the tealight candles would set off the smoke detectors in the hotel. Could you help me please?

A. actually they might. Hotels tend to have a silent alarm. My boyfriend did that for me for my birthday (Radisson Suites Hotel) and while in the process of putting all the candles out he recieved a phone call from the front desk saying the alarm went off and that they would be sending someone down. (he ran to put them all away. So what he did was take out the battery of the fire alarm. Problem solved! I noticed a lot of people saying "unless you light A LOT!" my boyfriend had about 20? maybe less...and just as he was lighting them thats when he got the phone call. I guess it just depends ...

How do you clean decorative candles?
Q. I have alot of decorative candles in my home. They get dusty and attract falling dust, hair, etc. Does anyone know how to clean them without burning the candles? I've tried water but that doesn't do anything. Thanks!

A. DO NOT use any kind of chemical all you need to do is wipe them off with panty hose. I am a partylite candle consultant. This is how I clean all of my display candles

What is so great about Gold Canyon Candles?
Q. I don't understand why so many people think these candles are the best thing in the world when you can get the same kind of candles from Yankee Candle. Yankee Candle is a little less, has just as many scents, and have stores so that people don't have to try to scrounge looking for a candle rep. I don't get it. Is it just because it's another "party" to hold and so people just naturally think they're good candles? They're going to melt away anyway.

A. You must have been the victim of an aggressive ad campaign because I have never heard of Gold Canyon candles. Some people are not great at coming up with an original product, but they know how to market. Congratulations to you for not falling for it. .
