How many on here own vegetarian/vegan cookbooks?
Q. I'm asking because I see many questions by new veggies asking for recopies, because they eat only boca burgers, etc. I have hundreds of good recopies collected from news groups, veggie web sites and forums like this, but I also have a nice collectoin of veggie cookbooks. I'm a 52yo vegetarian, so I've been around before the internet. I'm asking because nothing beats a good book with tested recopies.

A. I have two vegetarian cookbooks - but usually go for just the regular cookbook and alter recipes to fit my dietary needs. Have had no problems with doing that. At 54 - it doesn't take much for me to figure out how to adapt any recipe. It isn't like I am just learning to cook.

What Vegetarian Cookbooks would you recommend?
Q. I am strongly considering becoming either a Vegetarian or a Pescotarian (Vegetarian that eats fish) due to medical problems and the desperate need to lose weight and regain my health. Can anyone suggest some good cookbooks because I checked one out from the library and I could only find like two edible recipes in it.

A. Try these: The Vegetarian Epicure -- Anna Thomas The Art of Vegetarian Cookery -- Betty Wason The Best 125 Meatless Main Dishes -- Toomay/Geiskopf-Hadler and anything by Deborah Madison or Rose Elliot. But be aware that changing to a vegetarian diet is not what you need to do to lose weight. Trust me, I've been one for decades and still have to battle a weight problem. You need to take in fewer calories and up the exercise you get. That's all that works, not giving up meat and fish. But you can do it! Check with your doctor for a possible diet plan, have him refer you to a nutritionist or dietary specialist and you'll lose the weight. Good luck to you!

What types of cookbooks do you buy?
Q. Do you buy them for a certain cuisine, a certain chef, a certain ingredient (like all pasta), a certain diet (like low-carb, diabetic), a certain item (like bread or soups), or do you buy cookbooks that have myriad dishes like Betty Crocker? Just curious, I just noticed this while looking through my bookcase.

A. The kinds of cookbooks that I buy has changed over the years. Fifty years ago I collected everything...all the free cookbooks from the various food companies, little cookbooks published by churches or civic organizations, etc. Before we were told that real men don't eat quiche, I tried to find a recipe and ended up with a French cookbook in French. During the bicentennial, I got reprints of historic cookbooks. In more recent years, I've gotten books about cooking without fat. I have over 200 cookbooks but I use them as reference books more than as "cookbooks". There are some important things in cooking and many things that aren't important. I usually make up my own recipes after browsing through several cookbooks to see what others… [cont.]
