A. You are asking for the whole library!!! It is too big a subject that cannot be possibly be written down in such a column like this. Ask for a specific aspect, time-frame, region of the globe - like that. Why don't you get a copy of Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Glimpses of World History' - a letter-series, he wrote from jail to his daughter Indira Priyadarshini (Gandhi) as a 13th birthday present ? Imperialism was an outcome of European exploration of other parts of their unknown world. They discovered a whole new hemisphere with two huge continents. Rulers of Iberia and their representative imperialist buccaneers then laid claim to the new regions. There were imperial quarrels. Pope had to intervene and apportion S America between Spain & Portugal.… [cont.]

A. Imperialism may have affected deforestation by encouraging large scale projects with little regard for the overall situation in areas under political control. It should be noted that the problems of deforestation in the 18th and 19th century are the same ones we face today. Soil loss and ecosystem destruction. Deforestation effects started well before the 18th and 19th centuries though. for example Englandf and for that matter much of Europe was forests 2000 years ago. They been used up nowe and the environment we have now is a result of that deforestation. Some good, some bad.

Q. What are the economic consequences of acid rain on fisheries, forestry, and agriculture? ?

A. The answer actually depends on where you live and on your soil and such. For instance if you are in an area that is acid. You end up with low pH in lakes which affects them, and you need to use lime to correct the acidity in fields and forests can see species drift and so on. If, however, you are in a high lime situation, then acid rain is basically free fertilizer. As stacks have been scrubbed and sulpher removed, that sulpher ends up being sold as fertilizer since is is a necessary plant nutrient. So they are charging you for what you got freely before. The other thing that happens is that sulpher in the air is actually a significant cooler of the world's climate, though a temporary one. This is part of the reason why when a… [cont.]

Asked by The Crownless King - Sun Jun 17 13:43:27 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As some of your answerers have pointed out, the farming of trees is called silviculture, but a lot of the time, especially in developing nations where homesteads are smaller, the agricultural application of forestry is actually combined into the agricultural method in a process called agroforestry. In doing this a lot of benifits are attained for the agricultural/horticultura l crops that grow underneath/between the trees. Often there is less need for irrigation because the evaporation potential is decreased. Nitrogen fixing nodes or the fall of enriching foliage naturally fertilizes the soil such that less artificial fertilizer is needed and the agricultural yeilds increase. Some crops are sensitive to wind and agroforestry can act… [cont.]

How large an effect is Brazil's clearing of rainforest for agriculture in the amount of CO2 in the Atmosphere?
Q. All of the focus has been on the guilt of the United States, even though third world countries are clearing rainforests and using destructive agricultural practices, causing nitrogen rich runoff to suffocate the coral reefs. Rainforests and reefs are the biggest carbon sinks on Earth and perhaps we should spend more attention on restoring them. Carbon Dioxide is not a pollutant, the concern is just a buildup in the atmosphere. Right? So we need to focus on sequestration. Counting the net loss of Brazil's Carbon sequestration against the gain of not using petroleum, did the World gain? It seems to me that we could address CO2 levels by improving the quality of life for people in the underdeveloped world through education of better forestry… [cont.]

A. Probably a difficult question to answer. By clearing rainforest and planting crops for grazing or harvest you are replacing one CO2 sink with another. A crop of corn is producing oxygen and using CO2 just like the rainforest is. Do you think it is right for the world to criticize Brazil for developing its resources the way the USA and Europe developed theirs?

I want to pursue a dream of living in small-town northern Maine?
Q. I'm from New York City. Yes, you may think I'm crazy for doing something like this but I hate the grasp of metropolis, and I'd like a more spacious place to live, like Maine. Now, the place I'm interested in has mostly agricultural-type work. Other industries include forestry, and health care. I'm interested in either agriculture [ potato-picking :) ] or forestry. I'm not looking to be wealthy (and believe me, you couldn't be even if you wanted to). I'm just looking for quality of life and piece of mind. My question is... are there college majors you can take in agriculture? If so... what college(s)? I can't seem to find one that offers this type of class. Jobs up there are few and far-between, so I want to maximize my chances. Thanks… [cont.]
