From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The general definition of an audit is an evaluation of a person, organization, system, process, project or product. Audits are performed to ascertain the validity and reliability of information; also to provide an assessment of a system's internal control. The goal of an audit is to express an opinion on the person / organization/system (etc) in question, under evaluation based on work done on a test basis. Due to practical constraints, an audit seeks to provide only reasonable assurance that the statements are free from material error. Hence, statistical sampling is often adopted in audits. In the case of financial audits, a set of financial statements are said to be true and fair when they are free of material misstatements - a concept influenced by both quantitative and qualitative factors. Audit is a vital part of Accounting. Traditionally, audits were mainly associated with gaining information about financial systems and the financial records of a company or a business (see financial audit). However, recent auditing has begun to include other information about the system, such as information about environmental performance. As a result, there are now professions conducting environmental audits. In financial accounting, an audit is an independent assessment of the fairness by which a company's financial statements are presented by its management. It is performed by competent, independent and objective person(s) known as auditors or accountants, who then issue an auditor's report based on the results of the audit. Such systems must adhere to generally accepted standards set by governing bodies regulating businesses; these standards simply provide assurance for third parties or external users that such statements present a company's financial condition and results of operations "fairly." GNU Free Documentation License How do I use the $3,000 deduction for childcare? Would there be increased risk of an audit? Q. My mom has been coming to my house to help me babysit while my wife and I work. I've been giving her cash to reimburse her for food and gas. It probably came out to $3600 for the year. I just found out that I could claim $3,000 for childcare expenses. Is this the same situation as a household employee? Was I supposed to keep careful records and deduct social security or unemployment taxes? If I claim the deduction, my mom will need to claim the income. Would that expose us to additional risks of an audit? Is it worth the extra hassle and paperwork? Asked by jveryrad - Tue Mar 27 10:01:12 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You will have to report her name address and SS# to the IRS on form 2441. They will use this to check that she claims the income on her return. She will have to file a Schedule C and the income will be subject to self employment tax and income tax. She will be able to deduct any expenses she has on the Schedule C. Answered by Gary S - Tue Mar 27 10:29:54 2007 Does writing off gambling losses make you more prone for an audit? Q. I lost a couple thousand at a casino, but I am hesitant to write off the amount because I do not want to increase the chances of an audit. I expect to receive a win/loss statement from the casino shortly. taxtaxtaxtaxtax...thanks everyone. Asked by KQ - Tue Jan 8 16:14:54 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. No it does not increase your audit risk, but you can only write off losses to the extent you have winnings. From the IRS website: "You may deduct gambling losses only if you itemize deductions. Claim your gambling losses as a miscellaneous deduction on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF). However, the amount of losses you deduct may not be more than the amount of gambling income you have reported on your return. It is important to keep an accurate diary or similar record of your gambling winnings and losses. To deduct your losses, you must be able to provide receipts, tickets, statements or other records that show the amount of both your winnings and losses. Refer to Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions, for more information. " So, in… [cont.] Answered by Michael K - Tue Jan 8 16:20:48 2008 where can I find examples of an audit diagram?
