Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. It can be used to experiment and is not very dangerous. It has a slight alkaline taste resembling that of washing soda (sodium carbonate). It is a component of the mineral natron and is found dissolved in many mineral springs. The natural mineral form is known as nahcolite. It is found in its dissolved form in bile, where it serves to neutralize the acidity of the hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach, and is excreted into the duodenum of the small intestine via the bile duct. It is also produced artificially. Since it has long been known and is widely used, the salt has many related names such as baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, bicarbonate of soda. Colloquially, its name is shortened to sodium bicarb, bicarb soda, or simply bicarb. The word saleratus, from Latin sal æratus meaning "aerated salt", was widely used in the 19th century for both sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate. The term has now fallen out of common usage. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How much baking soda do you need to use to neutralize vinegar? Q. I was trying to get vinegar to 7 pH using baking soda but I needed to know how many grams of baking soda was needed. I ran out of time and it was still at 6 pH (using litmus paper to test) at 2.7g of baking soda. He said it was wrong. Whats the right amount? :( Asked by Cupcake - Wed Apr 8 13:47:08 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Assume 100 mL vinegar, which is a 5% solution of acetic acid, HC2H3O2. Let vinegar be called V. HC2H3O2 + NaHCO3 ===> NaC2H3O2 + CO2 + H2O Atomic weights: Na=23 H=1 C=12 O=16 NaHCO3=84 HC2H3O2=60 100mLV x 5gHC2H3O2/100mLV x 1molHC2H3O2/60gHC2H3O2 x 1molNaHCO3/1molHC2H3O2 x 84gNaHCO3/1molNaHCO3 = 7g NaHCO3 NaC2H3O2 is the salt of a weak acid and a strong base (NaOH), so the pH of a solution of it will be > 7. So to get to pH 7, you have to stop short of 7g of NaHCO3 so you'll still have some HC2H3O2 left. Can I use that? Asked by Amy T - Thu Mar 22 14:41:51 2007 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. sure, as long as it is still "fresh". To test, put some on a spoon and add a few drops of vinegar. If it bubbles and fizzes, its fine. If not, its too old and will not work in your cookies. Answered by Carrie M - Thu Mar 22 14:48:45 2007 How much baking soda should you use to whiten teeth?
