How serious is my brake problem, or are they trying to cheat me?
Q. I took my car in to get the tires rotated, balanced and aligned today and got a call that apparently the guy noticed a squeaking when he pulled the car in and they checked and my front callipers are leaking brake fluid. Apparently I need new callipers, new brake pads and a brake fluid flush and it is going to be over $700. I have not noticed any difference in my brake performance, any noise from them, or any leaking fluids but this guy told me that brake fluid does leak because of the high tempature it just gums up. I looked around on the internet and it sounds like it would be leaking and I would be able to see it. I need opinions as to whether it should be leaking and this guy is just trying to make money off of me or if this sounds… [cont.]

A. If the front caliper is truly leaking fluid, they should be able to disassemble it and show you were the fluid is leaking, or show you that your brake pads are saturated with brake fluid. Brake fluid does leak, and you may not see the leak on the ground as brake fluid may combine with the brake dust generated in the area by the brake pads. I would definitely get a second opinion, but if the brake caliper is leaking, it does need to be either rebuilt or replaced. If the caliper gets replaced, you'll need to get the brakes bleed (or as he's calling it brake fluid flushed) and new pads. Over $700 sounds a tad steep, but it depends on the cost of your calilper for your car, some brake calipers can be real expensive (excluding the actual… [cont.]

Q. I'm thinking of buying a fastback mustang the only problem is that of need brakes and brake lines any idea of how much this soul cost??? I'm willing to spend $1000 for brakes and brake lines. I think I'll need a whole new brake system! Will this be enough? I'm NOT doing it myself!

A. on a car that old, you may need a lot more, like wheel cylinders and Master cylinder.. rubber lines are around $25 each x3 and another $100 for shoes would be the minimum..

A. Time for new pads! Get it done soon before the rivets in the brake pads badly score the brake discs. If the discs are scored too deeply, they can't be resurfaced and you'll need new discs too - pricey.

How much would changing brake pads and brake lines cost?
Q. Any quick estimate on what it would cost me? I'm purchasing a 1989 Celica and the owner said it needed new brake pads and brake lines.

A. Pads should be relatively inexpensive, $30 max (for economy grade) and I would replace rotors too, about $25 a piece. (for domestic cars; from your autoparts store, not a brake shop) Labor is probably going to be little over an hour. Brake lines on the other hand are custom for every car and usually considered a "straight time" job, meaning that if the mechanic runs into problems and it takes 4 hours to do, you're going to pay 4 hours labor. Don't forget bleeding air from brake lines takes time too. I would suggest getting a quote from a shop before you buy it. Murphy's law says that if you fix just one brake line today, the others will start leaking next week. I recommend changing all your lines at once. Personally, unless you're… [cont.]

How can I make the brake pad sensor light go out for my 1999 mercury cougar?
Q. After I replaced the brake pads on all 4 wheels the light did not go out. The brake pads come with the sensor wires in them. There is no separate brake pad sensor and I tried the disconnect battery thing also.
Asked by R A P - Mon Feb 18 22:55:37 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. check the wiring from the sensor upwards. Alot of times when peeps change the brakes, they pull the wire holder off and then dont out it back on and it rubs on the tire or even rotor edge or face. I bet your problem is there.

How do I get my emergency brake to go down again?
Q. I recently had a 1997 Geo Metro given to me. I had to learn how to drive a manual transmission from scratch. Needless to say, I haven't driven it very much yet. Yesterday, I accidentally drove with the emergency brake on for 5 minutes or so. I immediately shut it off when I realized it, and the car wasn't doing anything strange. I went to the grocery store and came back home with no problems using the emergency brake to secure my parking. Now today the brake is stuck in the air and will not go down to shut off no matter how hard I press down. Did I seriously screw something up? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

A. Lift up the handle a little while pushing the button to release the ratchet mechanism. Or pull up HARD while pushing the button.

Asked by Folarin - Fri Oct 19 19:38:31 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the brakes run cooler so the cooler you keep the brakes the better they stop, the only drawback to those rotors are they can't be turned down like a normal rotor if they get warped or the pads dig into them.

What are some effective ways to get brake dust off of wheels?
Q. I have a 2008 Volvo XC90, and the wheels get stained with brake dust every week or 2. I clean them off with a towel, and when I wash my XC90 I clean it off too. A. Eagle Wire Wheel Cleaner will work fine if you spray it on a stone cold wheel and scrub lightly with a small nylon covered sponge. Rinse off with a garden hose. To help eliminate this issue, next time your car needs brake pads specify ceramic based pads instead of metallic or semi-metallic parts that are on your car now. EBC Red, Bendix CQ.3 and AC-Delco are good ceramic brands. Ceramic brake pads are very gentle on brake rotors and will not leave the brown / red color on the wheels. What's happening at the present time, the metallic pads are literally grinding stock off the cast iron brake rotors. The filth from the rotors and pad material is what makes your wheels and tires dirty.

But seriously, use a good quality brand, with shims and anti-rattle clips if equipped, and do the rest of the job properly, and you'll be fine.

How do you release the pressure in the brake lines for changing brake pads?
Q. I'm changing the brake pads on my car, but I need to release the brake pressure to get them off. How do I do this?
Asked by TheBonecrusher89 - Sun Aug 31 15:01:15 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As soon as the car is turned off there is no pressure in the brake system. The easiest way to compress the caliper pistons back to their full seated position is with a carpenters sliding C-clamp. They're avalable at wood working, hardware stores and Sears. Some rear calipers have indents or notches in two places around the faces of the piston. In that case you'll need a hardened inexpensive 3/8 square tool from an auto parts store. It fits a short socket extension and slides inside the notches. Slowely screw clockwide the piston back inside the rear calipers. If your rear caliper pistons have no notches simply squeeze them back using the sliding bar C- clamp.

Q. I have been told that the grinding noise i hear when i brake is because the roters and brake pads on the rear brakes need to be replaced. I don't trust most auto repair places so i was just wanting a general ballpark area so i can gage if im getting taken for a ride.

Q. I have been told that the grinding noise i hear when i brake is because the roters and brake pads on the rear brakes need to be replaced. I don't trust most auto repair places so i was just wanting a general ballpark area so i can gage if im getting taken for a ride.
