Do you have to know a lot about science to do horticulture?
Q. A friend of mine wants to get into horticulture but say they don't know much about science. Is that a problem? Do you need to to know a lot about science?

A. Depends on what u want to do. If it's a uni. degreee, some uni's do require a certain level of knowledge in Science, but others may not. But if ur friend wants to take it up as a hobby, he can teach himself. Really good info. is available on the web on the subject.

Getting a degree in green fingers: horticulture or garden design?
Q. I am both interested in studying horticulture and garden design. What would be a smarter thing to do: to get a degree in horticulture and then pursue some sort of specialisation in garden design or vice versa? To what an extent do these two things intertwine in real life?

A. I am in college right now for a degree in Horticulture. I want to do Landscape Design, and hope to go on to Landscape Architecture. As of right now, my community college only offers a degree in Horticulture, classes only for Landscape design. I am trying to get all my Gen Eds done before going for my Bachelor's Degree. In Landscape design, you need to know the growth habits of the plants you are using in your design, how they will mature, the Latin names because that is how they are identified in the industry, soil requirements and many other things. Your horticulture classes will teach you that.

A. Horticulture is the science of growing plants. In general it covers ornamental plants and also most vegetable and orchard crops. It does not include the growing of grain, that's agriculture. One could specialize (as I do) in ornamental horticulture and go into landscape design/ and maintenance. Gardening isn't a science, it's a pass-time. One can garden for pleasure or for home orcharding or vegetable gardens, but it's not a profession for those people. In general all outdoor plant/ and lawn activity is lumped into "gardening". Botany is a science. It is the study of how plants grow and live. In this science you're looking more at the 'inside' of the plant, whereas in Horticulture you're looking more at the 'outside' of the… [cont.]

How is horticulture and lanscaping like art (sculpture)?
Q. Horticulture is the science or art (How is it like art) of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants. Term can be broken down into two Latin words: hortus (garden) and cultus (tilling). As William L. George explains in his definition of horticulture: "Horticulture involves five areas of study. These areas are floriculture (includes production and marketing of floral crops), landscape horticulture (includes production, marketing and maintenance of landscape plants), olericulture (includes production and marketing of vegetables), pomology (includes production and marketing of fruits), and postharvest physiology which involves maintaining quality and preventing spoilage of horticultural crops."

A. You sort of answered your own question. The only thing I can think of to say is that Sculpture is work in three dimensions. So is landscape gardening, but of course you have to keep re-working it, because things grow and change naturally. A garden has to be designed in two dimensions on paper, and has to be made in three, like sculpture.

I have an associates degree in Horticulture. What could I do working with a landscape architect?
Q. I owned my own business for 2 years where I hand designed landscapes. Installed hardscapes, plants and irrigation pipes. Also, I hired the workers, ordered plants, soil, brick, granite dust, stone wear and paid the workers. I have been through a life changing event which took me out of this scene for a while, but want to go back into this working with a landscape architect. I am also an artist. I have a certificate in Landscape Design and Commercial Design which was part of my degree.

A. So you were a landscape designer. You can try going for a landscaping lisence. You can then either start your own buisness as a lot of architects do or apply for a job at a landscape design comany. You would need to know how to use the computer soft wear. For most companies thats required. Some Nurseries have their personal designers too. Good luck doing design because with an Associates in horticulture instead of Landscape design can be hard.

A. An Ornamental/Environmental Horticulture degree or some aspect close to it like if you want to become a landscape architect then you take those classes. Personally I found a dead-end in the horticulture field. I started going to school again and started taking plant identification classes because of my love of growing plants and ended up earning an Ornamental Horticulture AS degree. From there I transferred to the local University that didn't have that degree offered so I created my own using those OH classes as my lower division. Anyway, upon graduation I found very few job opportunities in that field. About the only thing available was working in a nursery and upon doing that for my educational work experience I found it… [cont.]
