An ion is an atom or molecule where the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. An anion (pronounced /ˈænaɪən/; an-eye-on), from the Greek word ἀνά (ana), meaning 'up', is an ion with more electrons than protons, giving it a net negative charge (since electrons are negatively charged and protons are positively charged). Conversely, a cation (pronounced /ˈkætaɪən/; cat-eye-on), from the Greek word κατά (kata), meaning 'down', is an ion with more protons than electrons.

An ion consisting of a single atom is a monatomic ion. If it consists of two or more atoms, it is a polyatomic ion. Polyatomic ions containing oxygen, such as carbonate and sulfate, are called oxyanions. When writing the chemical formula for an ion, its charge is written as a superscript '+' or '−' following a number indicating the difference between the number of protons and the number of electrons. The number is omitted if it is equal to 1. For example, the sodium cation is written as Na, the '+' indicating that it has one less electron than it has protons. The sulfate anion is written as SO4, the '2−' indicating that it has two more electrons than it has protons. If an ion contains unpaired electrons, it is called a radical ion. Just like neutral radicals, radical ions are very reactive.

How do chloride ions affect water transport and mucus buildup in cystic fibrosis?
Q. In the disease cystic fibrosis there is a defect in the ability of endothelial cells to transport Cl- ions. What rationale would this have on water balance and possible regulation of mucus build up in the lungs? Since this defect is in a gene for all cells would other tissues besides the lungs be influence, if so, which ones and why? Besides gene therapy, what pharmacological treatments are beneficial and why for treating the Cl- ion imbalance?

A. Secretin targets the pancreas, which cause the organ to secrete a bicarbonate-rich fluid that flows into the intestine. Bicarbonate ion is a base that neutralizes the acid, thus establishing a pH favorable to the action of other digestive enzymes to the small intestine and preventing acid burns. Other factors are also involved in the release of secretin such as bile salts and fatty acids, which result in additional bicarbonate's being added to the small intestine. Secretin release is inhibited by H2 receptor antagonists, which reduce gastric acid secretion. As a result, the pH in the duodenum increases above 4.5, and secretin cannot be released.

What was the concentration of iodide ions in the original solution?
Q. When 38.0 mL of 0.1250 M H2SO4 is added to 100. mL of a solution of PbI2, a precipitate of PbSO4 forms. The PbSO4 is then filtered from the solution, dried, and weighed. If the recovered PbSO4 is found to have a mass of 0.0471 g, what was the concentration of iodide ions in the original solution?
