A. If you don't want to do your own footwork, you likely won't have much success running your own business. Minimum money? You could find wood and whittle the pieces yourself, clear some dirt, and charge people to use it. Cost? Nothing (except time and splinters and maybe the knife to whittle with). Practical? Probably not. Otherwise, I would suggest checking around for local rent information, searching for equipment vendors, researching tax issues, etc., and creating a business plan, with what costs you expect, what kind of income you would need, how you would advertise, how you would differentiate yourself from your competition, etc.

Could I get permission to slide down a bowling lane?
Q. I need to get a shot for a video project I'm working on. It would just be one time that someone would need to slide down the lane. Would a bowling alley let me do this with advance notice and release forms? Or would I be better off just saving it for the last shot and going for it when no one is looking? How much trouble would I get in do you think?

A. i used to run a bowling center, and personally, i would let you you do it, as long as certain precautions were taken-for example-wearing bowling shoes so as to not damage the lane,a waiver in case of injury, and not going into the pit while the machine is on. sounds like fun!!

Why do they oil bowling alley lanes, and why aren't the balls oily?
Q. Why do they coat bowling lanes with oil anyway? But more puzzling is how does the ball come back in the return thingamagig without being all oily?
Asked by jason - Wed Feb 20 22:54:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The oil simply helps protect the wooden lanes from the friction a bowling ball causes when it's rolled down the lane. A bowling ball moves the oil around, picking it up and depositing it further down the lane (as "carrydown") a dried out track can start to develop on the lane. This is why the ball is not as oily as you'd think it would be.

Where can I find a copy of a single bowling alley's cash flow statement and balance sheet?
Q. I need this for a class. just building a small, 10 lane bowling facility and I need a copy of another companies cash flow and balance sheet to get an approximation of numbers.
Asked by Baseball 26 - Mon Dec 3 18:42:19 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. May be difficult to find online. Most small bowling alleys are independently owned. I doubt that they would put such financial information out there for all to see. What you may want to do is contact the owner / manager of small bowling alley in your area. While they may not want to give you exact dollars and cents of their operation, they may be able to give you enough generalizations so that you can complete your project.

BOWLING - I need to know if I can resurface my ball for another league I joined in another bowling alley?
Q. I took up bowling 2 years ago and played on a league at only 1 bowling alley. I never bowled anywhere else. I worked up my average to 179. I throw a HUGE hook, I start at the furthest dot on the left and throw my ball to the 3-5 board and bring it into the pocket. I moved to Chicago and bowl in a REALLY old bowling alley with wood lanes and hardly any oil. My ball keeps hooking into the gutter even before it hits the pins. I keep trying to hook the ball less but it feels uncomfortable. I really like my ball ( 15 lbs. Tropical Storm - had surface sanded for max grip) I love the way its drilled and I don't want a new ball. Could I have my ball refurfaced so that it slides on the lane and I could still use my massive hook. Its the way… [cont.]

A. you can have any ball resurfaced..i also bowl in house that has wood lanes...and i throw a mean hard hook...my suggestion to you is to ask the proshop if they have any used balls they would sell you.it would be cheaper than a new one. .and have it waxed up so it won't hook that much...also if you want less hook try this..hold your fingers closer together..i to am looking to by a new ball ..but i am going to have to make do also i want something that is more agressive...good luck and good bowling

Need help trying to build a bowling alley in basement any advice welcome.?
Q. a local bowling alley went out of buisness in our area. I was able to buy 6' lengths of the actual lane material for practiclay nothing. The two major issues I am facing are how to join the segments as seamlesly as possible and how to keep the lane level. As a side note any ideas on where/how to find the actual gutters for the lne would be a godsend.
Asked by hiiamwill - Sun Jul 27 03:56:05 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You might have to get creative with the gutters. I say get a pipe and table saw it in half! Then for the seamless and level lanes...OK first you can lay down the lane temporarily and then shim it where needed to get it level. You will have to glue the pieces together as to not make holes or bumps, well in my opinion anyway. I hope that helps!

A. Possibly, looks like they're redone right before the games start-- ou know what the most difficult part about bowling can be? Success doesn't always have anything to do with you, the ball, or the pins. If we could bowl in a vacuum, life would be easy--but bowling is a matter of constantly adjusting to new conditions, equipment, and game situations. You might think that it's only the touring pros who are constantly dealing with new oil conditions from week to week. But think about your own center, whether you've been playing on it for one season or 20. Has it played the same way, week after week, season after season? If it has, you're bowling in the most unique center on the planet.

A. If the floor is properly reinforced--keep in mind, parking garages do this all the time. However, it does take a particular kind of structure to be able to support that weight, so keep that in mind. (Otherwise your garage will be in your bowling alley.)
