Is it a good idea to build decking on top of pallets?
Q. I want to put decking on my well drained 14 m2 enclosed patio. 4x2 joists would cost a fortune, so do you think it would be a good idea to use pallets as a base?
Asked by Lewisthelab - Sun Mar 11 15:33:26 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you have ever tried to dismantle a pallet you will know how well the are made, if you get pallets in good condition, and you can get amost new pallets quite cheap there is no reason why they can't be be used under decking but you MUST make sure the are based on a damp prevetion barrier, the best way to achieve this is to put bricks under the pallets and ordniary roof slates between the pallets and the bricks, roof slates are one of the best damp proof barriers there is, make sure that no part of the pallets are in contact with the ground, or will be in the future, and as a precaution treat the wood with a good preservative. They might not last forever but the will last a very long time.

How and to whom do I sell used wooden pallets?
Q. I work at a dental supply company and we get 2 to 4 pallets a week and we were looking for someone to buy them from us every once in a while when we get enough to make it worth while.
Asked by Jennifer - Thu Sep 17 12:37:38 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You may want to try contacting some of your local Trucking or shipping companies in your area. From past experiences though, I can tell you, If your pallets are of the softwood (pine ) Varieties, they are pretty much worthless. If they are made from hard wood, they may be worth a few dollars a piece. My company also had a bunch of the softwood pallets and we finally had to run a add in the newspaper for free firewood, we now have a couple of guys that keep them cleaned up, otherwise we would of had to pay to have them hauled away.

Should pallets be seasoned if burned inside?
Q. If you burn cut up wood pallets in a stove/fireplace...Do you need to season them beforehand? Sandyspa, the pallets say HT on them, which means heat-treated. Some say they get baked to kill bugs. Does that really include pesticides?

A. DON'T burn them! They are coated with a chemical used to prevent termites and other bugs. If you do, you won't have to wonder about it ever again. Do me a favor and please don't burn them. I like people because they make the world interesting and you are among them. By The way, they smell because of the treatment using chemicals. Bye

Can wood from used pallets be used to make a path in a garden?
Q. I have several used pallets that I want to use the wood to make pathways throughout the backyard. My nephew said this would cause termites to get in my house. My question is, can I use them in the backyard as a path. (I will take apart and use the slats)
Asked by dolliebaucom - Wed Oct 15 17:40:30 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sure you can do it, but your nephew is right. The untreated wood will attrack termites to your yard and increase the risk of them getting in your house. You would be better off if you could use treated wood or gravel. This will eat up some money, but the termites can eat up a lot of money too.

How to make a wall shelving unit from 1 x 4 recycled wood pallets.?
Q. I need some suggestions on how to piece together and secure to drywall small sections of 1 x 4 recycled wood pallets to make a wall shelving unit approximately 7' x 7'. The number of shelves, spacing and symetry are not a major concern. Securing the pieces together to make the longer runs and what type of ties to use to secure to the wall is the biggest concern - aesthetics come later. Form follows function. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

A. With all due respect...WHY? I suppose if you have a large number of them hanging around you could, but as one answer states it seems you'd have to Spend money to modify them into a viable Deck surface. First of all they are obviously created for a very specific purpose, and subtly are considered disposable at some point, through various methods. Most often made of low grade scrap, as it relates to JUNK OAK, it isn't assumed that they will be found by someone creative, and are pretty much biodegradable (A good thing) If you don't actually Have any, certainly don't BUY any, and most often,,,as I have found anyone having pallet deliveries is already connected to a "pick Up"/Recycle service. For a DECK, if you choose to use, [cont.]

What expenses would be involved if a small business wanted to RFID 30 pallets of merchandise daily?
Q. How does the EDI generate the data to be embedded in the tags? Which equipment would be needed, and where would it be used in the supply line? Is one RFID tag normally used on each pallet, or each crate?
Asked by - - - Sat Sep 22 15:05:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Data on the RFID tag can be added during creation (e.g. its ID number) or during shipment (e.g. a sensor aRFID tag). The minimum hardware you will need are tags and readers. You will then need software to understand the tags the reader is reading and software to make information out of this data. Tagging is done based upon necessity. How important is an item? How frequently is a crate split? Generally use barcodes on small items, passive RFID (pRFID) on a case, active RFID (aRFID) on a pallet, and GPS on a shipment.

We have burned broken pieces for heat, and we have given away wood to friends. I have several sheds that I have re sided with pallet wood. I have also made several pieces of furniture with the wood. Tables, a chair or two, picture frames., flower boxes...etc... I also have a white (pallet) picket fence around my garden spot ! If you think about it the list of things that can be done with used pallets is endless. I would much rather recycle the wood and save a few trees. The only way to be Eco friendly with pallets is to recycle them. … [cont.]
