Shooting buckshot through rifled slug barrel?
Q. I recently purchased a Mossberg 535 ATS, the shotgun comes with two barrels a rifled slug barrel, and a smooth bore barrel with threads for a choke. I was wondering, can i shoot buck shot or bird shot through the rifled barrel, Will it screw up the rifling?
Asked by Cj - Fri Nov 27 14:01:27 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It will not hurt the barrel at all. It will cause the shot to spread in a "donut" pattern.

A. YES...You can Sabot style Slugs perform best and are more accurate in "rifled" slug barrels... BUT Traditional Rifled Slugs are best when used in a smooth bore shotgun barrel like your Mossberg "Slugster" barrel

A. Rifled slugs are made to be used out of smoothbores. You can use any choke you like, improved is often the most accurate with these slugs.

A. I shoot slugs thru a smooth bore shotgun to 100 yards... Although I haven't taken a deer at that distance I regularly hit 12 inch steel target plates at that distance... The most accurate 12 gauge slug for me has been in this order... #1 Federal Power-Shok 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce slugs... # 2 -- Brenneke KO 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce slugs... #3 Remington Sluggers 2 3/4 inch... The Federals give me the most consistent results to 100 yards... I have taken deer and other various critter to 75 yards with my shotgun with these slugs... This is with my glasses off with open iron sights...

Q. will shooting buckshot from a rifled slug barrel damage the barrel?
Asked by canoehunter - Tue Mar 4 13:26:24 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Normal lead buckshot or copper plated buckshot, no. The barrel metal is much too hard to be worried about lead. The only problem is the rifling donuts the pattern. Meaning you can have big gaps right in the middle of what you are shooting at. Also it may cause more lead fouling than normal, affecting the accuracy of the next slugs you fire until cleaned. heavi-shot buckshot is another matter, which is superhard and contains tungsten. I would not fire this out of my rifled barrels.

Where can I find a Benelli Nova 12g rifled slug barrel?
Q. I recently purchased a 12g Benelli Nova from Dick's. It came with the smooth bore barrel. The guy at the store told me to shoot rifled slugs. Will I be fine with the rifled slugs or should i go with maybe a rifled choke tube or the 24" rifled slug barrel? I can get the choke for like $50 bucks but i dont think 3" of choke is enough rifling to make a difference. And if i go with the barrel, where the hell can I find one? Benelli shows it on there website but there is no button to click if you would like to buy it. I found one website but it was sold forr about $500!!! I paid less for the whole gun.. Any information would be appreciated.

A. Able ammo has 67 Benelli Nova/Supernova barrels. For the price of the cheapest, ($315) you could probably buy another gun already fittted with a slug barrel. Rifled slugs from your smooth bore will probably be fine, but not as accurate as sabots using the rifled choke. Benelli barrels are not cheap, so I would use what you got, or the rifled choke.

Cheap .410 Rifled Slug Ammo?
Q. I am looking for bulk 100-1000 rounds of rifled slug ammunition for my handgun. If anyone can give me a site that I could find this on I would appreciate it. Also .45 Colt Lead, no brass, I want to reload to save some money, as well as a good set of Dies for this, any info will help. Thanks. I want a more accurate round though, something that has more of a round full metal jacket. I am going to have some of my engineers here at the company design a 2 1/2 inch .45 shell with a tungsten core and pointed tip, and yes its for the Judge. Or a 2 or 2.5 oz slug shell in .410. This is for experimental purposes only and I have all the machines to build and manufacture weapons and ammo as well as the materials.
Asked by EagleEyeBob - Tue Oct 21 11:14:08 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. I presume you have one of these Taurus Judge revolvers. Take my advise and keep it loaded with .45 LC ammo for home defense. Those .410 slugs are way to light. They weigh only 90 grains and are rated at about 1900 fps from a 46" barrel, from a 4" or 6" pistol barrel, they will be doing real good to reach 1,000 fps. And a 90 grain slug at 1,000 fps is basically .380 ACP ballistics. So use .45's for defense, and load up with .410 shotshells to handle snakes when you go fishing. Doc

A. It is perfectly safe to shoot a sabot slug out or a smooth bore shotgun... Of course a sabot is best used in a shotgun with a rifled barrel... Firing it thru a smooth bore will give unpredictable results... Its safe but not an efficient way to use a sabot... It would be best to use rifled (foster type) slugs thru your Maverick 88 shotgun... Of course change the choke to an Improved Cylinder (IC) choke...

A. It won't hurt the gun but I can't see any reason for alternating buckshot with slugs. Most states that require the use of a shotgun for deer hunting, such as here in Indiana, buckshot is not allowed anyway. If you are doing it for defensive purposes, just go with the buckshot. it is plenty powerful medicine for that purpose.
