How often the sprayed non-electronic rust protection should be for a car?
Q. Hello, I have a Nissan Altima 1999. I had the the rust protection for all the car using petroleum based sprayed material twice for the last 2 winters. I am in a cold country where snow salt on the roads is used all winter long. How often and when I should have this protection done? Thanks

A. id have it checked every year ,but it shouldn't be necessary to have this done al the time, they usually warranty it for life time, but it doesn't hurt to check it every year and see if any has peeled off or been knocked off,i check mine about every 3 years and im in the south,it doesnt hurt to recoat it once in a while your self, they make the small cans that work really well, good luck.

A. Rust is one reason they invented paint. Krylon Company makes a clear enamel covering, I am sure they have it in a matte finish. Best to visit the paint section of your local hardware store. They have dozens of answers for your dilemma.

Question about Rust Protection on the Nissan Rogue?
Q. HI. Just wondering on people's thoughts on purchasing a "protection" package for a 08 Nissan Rouge. Including packages from www.finalcost.ca Electronic Rust Protection ( not a spray) (definite) Optional: Xzilon Ultimate Paint Protection Fabric and Carpet Protector Paint Bubbling Coverage.. Should I go for the whole package or just the rust Protection:? Also How bout a 3M hood protector? Should I pick that up for the 08 Rogue as well?
Asked by Wisegi - Sun Nov 18 02:39:09 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. doubt that anything except the 3M hood protector will stop rust. I could not find Finalcost.ca? Ziebart would by my choice for undercoating Carpet and fabric protector go out and buy 12 cans do it the first vacuum job. Soak the seats several time and let dry and carpets too save the $. Sounds like what you have above is the dealership added package you can do much better shopping for those protective measures your self. Just make it clear you do not want your car dealer protected and you are not going to pay extra for there services.

A. Strip the insulation back on a 12 to 16 gauge stranded wire and stip the bare wire between the upper radiator hose and the hose clamp. Attach an eyelet terminal to the other end. Take the nut off the negative battery terminal and slide the eyelet onto the battery cable bolt. Reinstall the nut and you have made your own quick and check rust inhibitor.

A. if its just surface rust sand it down and apply the protective coating, if its deeper than just surface would suggest replacing if possible or taking to a body shop to repair. would not suggest treating a rusted area with anything as it wont really do anything for that spot. local auto shops can recommend products, but would suggest asking your mechanic on what he would use once you get the rust removed.

Can Krown rust proofing be applied over another (oil based) protection?
Q. I've bought a second hand car which has the oil/grease coating style protection. I've been advised that the Krown is much better as it protects in areas the oil coating can't reach. Is this BS? Can I apply the Krown over the other coating?
Asked by Jam&cream - Thu Aug 31 20:52:40 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My experience with this is that the oil based substance will not allow the other rustproofing to adhere adequately, meaning you'd have to strip the old stuff off first. My advice? Don't worry about it too much. I think the stock rustproofing should be ok. Save your money for something else. Hope this helped.

A chemical solution to remove rust only, but not dissolve bare steel?
Q. I'm wire-brushing some rusty Ball jar rings so I can spray paint them for protection. The threads make it impossible to brush down to bare metal. I know that fairly concentrated acids solutions such as muriatic (or hydrochloric, HCl) acid will remove rust, but don't they also eat the steel? I don't want to lose any of the metal as the lids are thin enough as is. I'm not interested in an expensive commercial product available only in the USA, as I'm outside the country. Did find a local dealer for Evapo-rust but imported it's pricey and the minimum is one gallon, far more than I need. The rings hold down jar tops only during the canning process and are then stored until next time -- they never touch the food as does the inside part of the… [cont.]

A. Don't bother using rusty rings or trying to clean them. Just toss them out and purchase new ones. They are not expensive and your health is more important than a few dollars. If you are going to can/preserve/use canning jars, then please be safe about it.

Do Honda's rust easy?
Q. Does honda rust easier, or see less rust than other cars? I ask, because the dealer is trying to sell me rust protection and undercoat protection. My friends husband, a mechanic says its a waste of money, cash grab. Do Hondas rust easy, if I plan on owning it until its about 9 years? Please, no comments that its not American...I am Canadian, so I really do not care, and prefer Honda's over most other vehicles.
Asked by Jill - Wed Oct 21 02:23:37 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hahaaa Jill, don't get the undercoat protection, it IS a waste of money. Hondas do NOT rust easily, nor do other cars made in this decade. Cars today are galvanized, and they last forever as far as rust goes.

A. Simple. Painting is application of an enamel paint or a protective paint to keep the surface from oxidation Galvanisation is coating with zinc. Lubrication is coating with oil to protect from rusting. Many tools and gages are coated like that Zink Alloy - have not heard of but probably galvanising is meant In addition tin plating is also used to protect iron from rusting.

A. To understand cathodic protection one must first understand the corrosion mechanism. For corrosion to occur, three conditions must be present. 1. Two dissimilar metals 2. An electrolyte (water with any type of salt or salts dissolved in it) 3. A metal (conducting) path between the dissimilar metals The two dissimilar metals may be totally different alloys, such as steel and aluminum, but are more usually microscopic or macroscopic metallurgical differences on the surface of a single piece of steel. If the above conditions exist, at the more active metal surface (in this case we will consider freely corroding steel which is non uniform), the following reaction takes place at the more active sites: (two iron ions plus four free electrons)… [cont.]

Brand-new car has tiny but visible rust spots. What recourse have I?
Q. My 2006 Subaru Forester has fewer than 500 (yes, five-hundred) miles on it; I bought it new three months ago. I purchased the optional 5-year "advanced vehicle protection" -- a $400 feature that is supposed to protect the exterior and interior from cooties and stuff like that (but, apparently, not rust). Oh, and the car is always garaged. Of course I'll alert the car dealer, but what is reasonable and realistic for me to expect? I'm plenty disappointed, and I don't want that bitterness to cloud what's realistic. Please advise.

A. The problem you have is called "rail dust" and is very common, most noticeable on white or light colored vehicles---the dealer prep department should have methods of removing these little spots and are covered under new car prep or warranty. Methods we used in our prep department were clay bar removal or oxalic acid--"wood bleach" These tiny rust spots are from metal particles being thrown up in the air from train wheels on the trains used to transport new vehicles and they settle onto the cars and rust. Every car manufacturer that ships via rail knows of the problem and pays their dealer network to remove the rail dust under warranty or new car prep...you should not have to pay for it and they should offer a rental car for a day for your… [cont.]
