Which sublevels can be found in the 4th principle energy level of an atom?
Q. Also, do you know what p orbitals are shaped like?
Asked by aych101 - Tue Jan 30 18:19:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The sublevels in the 4th principle energy level of an atom are: s,p, d, and f. Think of it as... you have a number of sublevels equal to the number of energy levels (e.g.: the 3rd energy level has 3 sublevels: s,p, and d). Also, the p orbitals are dumbbell shaped... sort of like the number eight: 8.

A. E) none of the above There are four of them. 0, 1, 2 & 3. Or you know it as s, p, d & f block on the periodic table. The farther away from the nucleus an electron gets, the more possible shapes the orbital has. Every new quantum level has one more sublevel. That is just how it goes. Idk why you didn't believe me the first time. I got you a site to prove it.

A. Remember that n, the principal quantum number tells us about the energy. Higher values of n are further from the nucleus. L tells us about the orbital, where L is 0 to n-1. If L is 0, it is an s orbital, 1 a p orbital, 2 a d orbital or 3 it is an f orbital. Thus when n=1, L can only be 0, this would be the 1s orbital. When n=2, l can be 0 or 1 thus the 2s and 2p orbitals. Ml tells us about how many orbitals fall within each type, its values go from -L to L. So when n=1, L =0 and Ml=0, or only one type of orbital (the s). When n=2 and L=1 (the 2p orbital) ml can have the values -1,0,1 (corresponding to the px, py and pz orbitals). Each one of these orbitals can hold two electrons, this is why all s orbitals hold 2 electrons (one solution… [cont.]
