Technology is a broad concept that deals with an animal species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species' ability to control and adapt to its environment. Technology is a term with origins in the Greek "technologia", "τεχνολογία" — "techne", "Ï„Îχνη" ("craft") and "logia", "λογία" ("saying"). However, a strict definition is elusive; "technology" can refer to material objects of use to humanity, such as machines, hardware or utensils, but can also encompass broader themes, including systems, methods of organization, and techniques. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include "construction technology", "medical technology", or "state-of-the-art technology". The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms. Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves the human condition or worsens it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticise the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such as transhumanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communities have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations. Q. I'm in grade 12 and I want to know what education I need to get into an IT career. I live in Toronto, Canada and there are only 2 Universities (outside the city) that offer a Bachelor of Information Technology. There are three colleges in my area that offer diplomas for Systems Technology, Systems Technician, Information Systems Business Analyst, and Networking. Is it better to get a diploma from college or a degree to get started in information technology? Is there any other way of starting an IT career? Asked by Nicker - Sat Jan 3 12:36:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. get certifications first... then worry about getting a degree... seriously a well certified guy is almost always better and more valuable then a guy with a diploma... what part of IT do you want to get into? it really is a broad field. start by studying for a+ then decide if you want to do windows admin network admin DBA (oracle sql etc) or development or whatever... there are certs for all of these paths... just go down the path and you will do ok... Answered by westtnpplrffun - Sat Jan 3 12:57:12 2009 What new technology would be a good topic for my ninth grade technology class? Q. It has to be an "emerging technology" meaning new. It can't be more than three years old. As in, a phone is not an emerging technology. The Iphone is. I'd like something with enough information to do an oral report and written report on it. Currently on my list, meaning don't suggest them, are projectable keyboards, the aptera, the iphone, and a computer currently being devloped with microsoft that "reads brain waves". Thanks! Do you not ge tit? A phone is not new; the iphone is. A tv is not new, a plasma screen tv is. Asked by Gladys - Wed Jan 9 19:57:16 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Just for the record, the iPhone is not a new technology as the technology that it actually draws from existed years before the iPhone was even conceived. A new technology that I've been following recently is Holographic Data Storage. It's really interesting because they manage to cram so much data into so little space, bringing new compression techniques to the forefront. Good luck on your selection! Q. Can scientist create a satellite technology to guide a golf ball to its target? Is my idea too imaginative? Asked by M m - Sat Oct 6 17:37:40 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wouldn't it make playing golf boring? I mean even more so... Anyways, to make a projectile into a guided projectile you need two things: 1) a sensor and 2) and effector. A sensor needs to figure out where you need to go. This could be a GPS receiver that tells the ball where it is and then you just need to tell it where the hole is. You can maybe use 2 or 3 radio signals too. An effector make the ball go in the direction of the target. Missiles and bombs use fins but you can't have those on the ball. Maybe you can have tiny rockets or little drag sails that pop out to change the trajectory. It may also be possible to change the ball's trajectory by moving the center of mass but the effect would be pretty small.
