A tent is a shelter consisting of sheets of fabric or other material draped over or attached to a frame of poles or attached to a supporting rope. While smaller tents may be free-standing or attached to the ground, large tents are usually anchored using guy ropes tied to stakes or tent pegs. First used as portable homes by nomadic peoples, tents are now more often used for recreational camping and temporary shelters.

Tents range in size from one-person "bivouac" structures for a hiker to sleep in, to huge (circus) tents capable of seating thousands of people. The bulk of this article is concerned with tents used for recreational camping which have sleeping space for one to ten people. Larger tents are discussed in a separate section below.

Tents for recreational camping fall into two categories. Tents intended to be carried by backpackers are the smallest and lightest type. Smaller tents may be sufficiently light that they can be carried for long distances on a touring bicycle, a boat, or even a person's back. Some very specialised tents have spring-loaded poles and can be 'pitched' in seconds, but take somewhat longer to strike.

The second type are larger, heavier tents which are usually carried in a car or other vehicle. Depending on tent size and the experience of the person or people involved, such tents can usually be assembled (pitched) in between 5 and 25 minutes; disassembly (striking) takes a similar length of time. The military organisations of most nations use such tents to temporarily house troops living and working under field conditions.

How to string paper lanterns in a tent for outdoor wedding>?
Q. Hi, My wedding is in August and I have a 40 x 60 tent, my Aunt rented bulb lights for the tent... however, I would rather use a ton of chinese lanterns. Does anyone have any ideas for stringing them? I planned on buying LED lights, because we don't want to have to run a generator. Any suggestions? Anyone know where I can buy them in bulk? Thank for any information you can give me.

A. I don't know where you are, but there's a company in Vancouver Canada, called Coolite, that sells many paper lanterns. They have a website. The lanterns are very easy to string on light gauge wire or fishing line since they're so light but they don't come with lights in them. The best way to achieve that is probably with Christmas lights, putting one shade over each bulb. If you can get LED lights that are battery-operated, that would work too but then you have to be sure the lights will burn long enough from a battery so you aren't trying to replace batteries halfway through the party. Perhaps you should talk to an electrician and see what you could run off a couple of car batteries, or whether you could get a quiet generator and put it… [cont.]

What is the best tent campground at Glacier National Park?
Q. I note that there are two campground at Glacier National Park - Fish Creek and St. Mary. It appears that Fish Creek is on the water. I am looking for the best tent campground and the best site at that campground. I am not really interested in being in a campground with a bunch of Motorhomes. Would prefer a more secluded type of place. Unable to do back country due to the fact that it is going to be just me and my young daughter.
