How many watts does the amp have to have for an 800 watt subwoofer?
Q. I have a 12' 800 watt Pioneer, how many watts does the amp have to have?
Asked by ALPINEFAN - Sun Jul 1 22:12:48 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will want to find an amp that is rated the same as your sub's RMS and at stable ohms for your sub. If you have a 800 watt PEAK power, and you have an amp that is pushing 800 watts RMS, then you will be over powering your subs. You'll blow your sub in a heartbeat. Also, if you have a 800 watt RMS sub that is a 4 Ohm DVC, then you need to find an amp that you can wire accordingly. Remember, wiring a sub down to the right ohms is also going to play a huge role into buying your amp. For example, if your sub is rated 800W rms at 4 ohms DVC, then you will probably end up wiring your subs down to 2 ohms. Meaning, you'll need to find an Monoblock 800 watt x 1 @ 2 ohms amplifier. Here is a wiring diagram to help you out.

What is the difference between Watts and Watt hours when talking about generating electricity?
Q. What does it mean when it says it will produce 200 watts? What does it mean when it says it will produce 200 watt hours? Which is greater a watt or a watt hour or can they not be compared?

A. If something says it can generate 200 Watts, then it should be able to generate 200 Watts of power on a 'continuous' or other specified basis. If something can deliver 200 Watt-hours, (usually measured at a specific current), then it can deliver 200 Watts for one hour, or 20 Watts for 10 hours, or 400 Watts for 1/2 hour. Battery capacity is often reported in Amp-hours or Watt-hours. Batteries are usually measured at 1/10 or 1/20 of a battery's capacity. Let's take a 12 Volt battery rated for 60 Amp-hours at C/10 discharge current. That battery would have 12x60=720 Watt-hour capacity, but that rating would be established by draining the battery at 6 amps and the battery lasting 10 hours (6x10=60 Amp-hours, 60 Amp-hours x 12 Volts = 720… [cont.]

How many watts of lighting do I need over a dining table?
Q. I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a 100 watt halogen light bulb for my dining area. Now that I've decided to replace it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light should I be looking at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it'll be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I should be looking at? Is there some other measurement to consider? Because my dining room has a sloping roof, I can really only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough -- so that's out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that focus upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table should mostly focus downwards -- to draw people into the dining area. What are my options? For what it's worth, I… [cont.]

A. Wattage definitely is what we think of when we think of how bright a light bulb is... but that generally really is meant to indicate how much electricity the unit is converting to another form of energy (light/heat). You could use a 9 Watt fluorescent screw-in bulb that has the same brightness as a 40 Watt incandescent bulb. Anyway, what you need is, as you said, something that DOES direct light down to your eating surface... not up onto your cavernous ceiling. I actually believe that there is a pretty decent selection of chandeliers out there with lamp covers that direct light down... you just might have to shop around a bit. Have you considered a small track-lighting installation that would allow you to hang, say, three pendant… [cont.]

How many watts for a decent car sound system?
Q. Hi there, I'm planning on replacing the factory speakers on my car. How many watts are good for some 6x9 speakers? I was looking at some 100 watt rms and 400 peak speakers that looked interesting but I'm not sure if it is enough. Also will I need an amp to run these at a good level? I am not looking for a sound system that will be heard a mile away, I just want something nice that will not be a huge disappointment if I decide to turn it up once in a while.

A. Watts don't equal good. You can have a 200 watt sound system sound perfectly fine, and never need to improve on it. It's like asking "how many miles an hour for a decent car?" Does it really matter if it can do 200mph, if you only drive it 60? No. It does just as well as a car that does 150. Or 100. So, it's totally pointless.

How many watts does my solar panel need to be if I am running lights only at night?
Q. I want to use 12vDc rope lighting that is 3 watts per foot and i am looking to use approx 64 ft of light. I am probably only going to have the lights on for 3-4 hours at night. I will be running the lights off a 12 volt car battery. What wattage will my solar panel need to be to recharge the battery during the day. I would appreciate any help, Thank You! I am also looking at led lighting that is only 0.8 watt per foot.
Asked by Carrie - Fri Aug 28 19:06:04 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Here is the math. 3W/ft * 64 ft = 192W 4hr * 192W = 768Whr <--- energy needed per day 768Whr / 12v = 64Ahr 64Ahr * 200%(d-rate) = 128Ahr <--- Your battery needs to be a minimum 128 Amp - Hour to opperate without damaging itself. At Boise, Idaho Latitude: 43.6 we get 5 sun hours per day average If your latitude is less than that, your sun hours will likely be greater. 768Whr / 5hr = 153.6W ~ 160W panel required. I highly recommend that you get a charge controller in addition to this panel, as it will protect your batteries and enable charging during low light conditions. Some even come with automatic light timers and or motion sensors: For more information on solar electric components and layout visit: Hope that helps!

A. Probably marketing deal, watts are watts, power in is power out, they like to fake things with motors sometimes by saying things like peak power, there really is no such thing, power is power, one horsepower is 746 watts so you can figure it out from there.

How far over the watts limit can you go with desk lamps?

Do I need to run over to the store and get another bulb, or am I probably fine? Thanks all for your responses. To answer Guru's question, it takes both regular and CFL. It says the max for regular is 40 watts and the max for CFL is 11.

A. It depends on distance and ambient temperature. If you use a ceramic heater, spot light or an infra-red heat lamp, you can get a rheostat (lamp dimmer) to control the amount of heat. This way you do not have to move the lamp up and down, you just adjust the control. Using the dimmer, you can go with 150 watts if you think you may need that much power. If you use a mercury vapor lamp, you cannot use the dimmer. These are much better as they provide the necessary UVB light. They also produce the heat. You need to move these closer or further away depending on temps. No closer than 12 inches, no further than 18 inches. Of course you will need an alternate heat source when the lamp is off. These are by far the best lamps! Good luck! Get a… [cont.]

A. As long as its not getting below about 60 F at night they should be fine. You might think about saving up for a larger tank or even another tank. So that you could seperate them, or at least give them a larger area to live in. 2 basking spots for 2 Dragons as well. If they are both Male they will fight.

PC will boot all fine and dandy, but when you open your games that require more of the GPU, your PC will randomly shut down. A. Watts = volts x amps. Most household power is 120 volts. A GE 18.0 cubic foot top freezer refrigerator uses 15 amps, so it would require 1,800 watts (plus a bit more for start-up current.) A typical 100 watt light bulb uses, well, 100 watts. (Switch to Compact Fluourescent Lamps -- they use about 10-15 watts.) A 20" conventional TV (Philips SDTV) uses only 120 watts of power. A GE Spacemaker II countertop microwave oven (800 watts of cooking power) actually uses 1,300 watts of power. (The electronics are not 100% efficient converting input power to cooking power.) Add it all up and you need about 3,000 to 3,500 watts to run all these appliances if everything was running at the same time. However, a refrigerator compressor cycles on… [cont.]

How to convert microwave owen Watts into temperature?
Q. Dear friends, I have a Samsung microwave oven (1712N model). The settings for this oven are in Watts and not in degrees Celcius. The problem is when I have to heat any ready-to-eat meal (like a frozen pizza), the directions for cooking mention "heat for 20 minutes at 200 degrees Celcius". Can you please provide any guidelines about how to convert the Wattage into Degrees Celcius. Thanks & Regards.

A. The wattage of your microwave oven has nothing to do with temperature. If the food manufacturer does not give you microwave instructions on the package, and a microwave is the only way to cook the meal, then you will have to experiment yourself. But first be sure your item is microwavable. It's been a long time since I've seen a package that did not include microwave instructions though...be sure that the item you have can be heated/cooked in a microwave. The fact that instructions are not included, in this day and age, would be a bit of a warning sign for me.

How many watts and channels to get for my amp?
Q. I just bought a 10 inch JL Audio subwoofer (unpowered). I'm about to buy an amplifier, however I'm not sure how many watts I should get and how many channels it should be. I might be getting another subwoofer and new speakers so I'm not sure if that will have any effect on the channels and watts. Any suggestions?

How much continuous power in watts can a solar generator produce?
Q. How large of a solar system would I need to run 600 watts for 12 hours? Any ideas on how much it would cost to build one? Thanks.

A. To get 600 watts, you need at least a 600 watt solar array. The output goes down when the sun is not directly perpendicular to the array, so you probably need a 1000 watt unit, or perhaps higher. If you want 600 watts continuously for 12 hours, you need to be in a location where you get 12 hours of sun per day. You can't build solar arrays, you have to buy them, as they require a complicated factory and chemicals in their construction. Search on line, there are hundreds of places where you can buy them. .
